Stephen Keel — blogger for the Rapids Undercurrent; one of Denver’s 24 most eligible bachelors, according to 5280 magazine; Banana Republic employee; and Colorado Rapids defender — was waived by the team on Friday.

Keel, from Littleton, captained the Rapids Reserves to MLS Reserve Division championships in 2006 and 2007.

Keel appeared in 10 games over four years for the full Rapids squad, including seven starts. Last season, he posted career highs in games played (six), starts (six) and minutes (540).

The team’s depth at the back line meant Keel probably wouldn’t surpass those numbers in games, starts or minutes; and the loss of the reserve league means he wouldn’t be playing there at all. But he was a popular player who trained hard, selflessly promoted the team and was ready to take the field when called upon. When he did play for the full squad, he was steady and reliable. He always seemed to have a smile on his face, and he was very accommodating with me on the occasions our paths crossed.

I’ll miss him, and I know others will, too.

Also on Friday, the Rapids announced the signing of forward Ross Schunk, a fourth-round selection in this year’s draft, 47th overall. Terms were not disclosed.
