MLS opener in Seattle: O, what a night

Random thoughts and observations from Seattle’s 3-0 throttling of 2008 MLS Cup finalist New York on Thursday night. …

Did anybody notice the Sounders’ band playing Sell Out by Reel Big Fish? Awesome. …

I volunteer to play cowbell if the Rapids ever decide to put together a band. It’s the only instrument I could manage. …

I wrote months ago on FC Rocky that I was looking forward to the Sounders’ first game at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. I remember receiving a fairly negative response to that post. …

Colombian Fredy Montero didn’t earn man-of-the-match honors just because he scored two goals; he scored two goals because he was the most exciting player on the field (yes, that includes you, Juan Pablo Angel). Montero is small, but he is fast and dangerous. What a debut. …

And, unfortunately, that was former Rapids defender Mike Petke gettting torched on Montero’s second goal. …

Another guy who was scary fast was the Sounders’ Dane Richards, a Jamaican. …

Although Red Bulls goalkeeper Danny Cepero got lit up for three goals (and one of them was entirely his fault), I really liked the way he played. He was aggressive. He moved around the penalty area well. He was imaginative with his distribution. And he was just a little quirky. I liked it overall (except for the part about allowing three goals to an expansion team in its first game ever). …

Can I have just a small cut of the profits from scarf sales in Seattle? Pretty please?

Seattle has the best logo in Major League Soccer. …

I don’t see the official attendance on the Sounders’ Web site or the Major League Soccer site, but the TV folks were saying roughly 34,000. …

And speaking of the TV folks, I can’t say how much I enjoy listening to JP Dellacamera and John Harkes. …

Richards is on the Red Bulls.

Also, agree that Dellacamera and Harkes did a nice job. Hopefully that is a sign of things to come from MLS announcers.

Montero also had an assist last night and was awesome. I also liked Cuban midfielder Alonso. He was one of the defectors from a Cuban national team match in Houston in the last year or so. He was a pit bull in midfield and kept New York from getting anything going.

thanks, bonji. yes, richards plays for new york, not seattle. he and angel should make a formidable duo up front, but not last night. richards did have a few moments. but, obviously, was not able to finish.

I personally do not like the combo of Harkes and Dellacamera. They are both too dry. It would be great if they could get one sober and one passionate announcer (Wynalda was good when he wasn’t pissing off all of California).

I really liked how that turf played. I forgot that it wasn’t real grass very quickly. It was probably faster than natural grass but it was nearly as bad as TFC and REVS grass.

Montero showed some great skill moves. Red bulls had no midfield. Rojas was slow and looked like he was playing against 3 guys anytime he got the ball. I really liked Le Toux and Jaqua and Nyassi. Their combination play was really good and will probably improve as the season goes along.

Hopefully the Rapids can learn a thing or two about cultivating that kind of fan support. Really a great night for MLS.

Agree on most every point George. That match was a pleasure to watch. I also like JP and John, however as a Quakes fan I’m already cringing that Bobby Convey is on our team. Sure, I’m not a Convey fan but I HATE how Harkes mispronounces his name every time — it’s not Con-vay. Other than that, I love ‘em.

Seattle has the best logo and maybe the best uni’s too … and I love how passionate and involved Drew Carey is. He’s our non-douchey Mark Cuban.

Great game!!! Montero played well. Rojas was horrible turning over the ball.

mike, it’s hard to disagree with the statement that the sounders have the best uniforms. any soccer jersey that has the xbox 360 live logo on it RULEZZ!

i agree. i would LOVE to see that kind of support night in and night out for the rapids. i’d also like to see a jersey sponsor.

xbox360 on the jersey? Just make sure when they go through a losing streak you use the ‘Red Rings of Death’ headline. do it for me.
