Week 1: my votes for player of the week

I voted for Seattle’s Fredy Montero for player of the week. The young Colombian scored twice and added an assist in the season opener for Major League Soccer and the MLS debut game of the Seattle Sounders.
That game will be remembered for years and will go down as one of the key moments in the history of this young league. And the player that rose to the occasion was Montero.
The Galaxy’s Landon Donovan got my nod for second place. He scored twice in the final 10 minutes for Los Angeles and helped earn a 2-2 tie with D.C. United. (Did anybody notice that Christian Gomez scored for United?)
I considered Chivas USA’s Paulo Nagamura, but he didn’t contribute much to the Goats’ 2-1 victory over the Rapids other than the two goals. I thought the Rapids were the more dynamic team, and Nagamura didn’t do much to affect play other than being in the right place at the right time twice in the match.
Here’s my North American Soccer Reporters ballot:
PLAYER NAME: Fredy Montero, Seattle
SECOND: Landon Donovan, Los Angeles
NAME/AFFILIATION: George Tanner, ColoradoSoccerNow.com
COMMENTS: i think anybody would be crazy not to vote for montero. two goals and an assist in front of more than 34,000 in seattle and the entire nation? on opening night of the season? in the franchise’s first game? it was an amazing debut. this game is one for the history books, and montero was the man of the league for the first week.

I have to agree with you on Montero… let’s just hope they can convince this kid to stick around for a while. It looks like he’s having fun at the moment. It’s a joy to watch that kind of talent grow in this league.
As for Donovan, he didn’t do much to impress me this weekend… though his perfectly-timed run on the second goal was exquisite. I’d have to give my second-place vote (if I had one) to Davy Arnaud.
What, no love for Bobby Convey? Your anti-Quakes bias is evident and disgusting.
Pistols & Knives? i think you should find a more appropriate manner in which to convey your aggression. get it? “convey” your thoughts? i heard that on xbox live the other day.
Whoa. I was on XBox Live the other day. Were you the guy who’s blood kept splattering all over me?
Fredy Montero played a great game. Davy Arnaud had a good game also. Latest Soccer News
