Rapids seventh in MLS power rankings

Wow, no respect for Colorado in the Major League Soccer power rankings.
The Rapids stand in third place in the Western Conference standings with two victories, one loss and one tie. But they’re in seventh place in the power rankings devised by the MLSnet.com staff, behind Real Salt Lake and Kansas City.
RSL is ranked fifth with a 2-1 record.
Then there’s Kansas City, which lost 2-1 to the Rapids in Commerce City in March. The Wizards stand at 2-2. And after shutting out the Sounders on Saturday at Seattle, K.C. leaped from ninth, past the Rapids, to sixth in the rankings.
Yes, the Rapids were outplayed by a Columbus team that is 0-2-3 and needed a late goal from Conor Casey to escape with a point. But they did escape with a point on the road. And for that, the MLSnet.com crew dropped them from sixth to seventh (whereas the Crew climbed one spot after the same tie).
Here’s what the “rankers” say about the Rapids: “The concern for the Rapids is goalkeeper Matt Pickens, who saw a back injury keep him from the clash with the Crew.”
It wasn’t a concern last week when Preston Burpo took care of business in a victory on the road. And Burpo’s fine performance in Ohio on Saturday didn’t strike me as a concern, either.

So, I am glad somebody has spoken up on this issue. It is pretty ludicrous. My theory is no one actually watches the Rapids or pays any attention to them, so they see the results, read the match preview or injury report and put something that makes sense to the 95% of MLS fans out there who could care less about our beloved Rapids. Its all right to me as long as Gary Smith is telling the squad every day how nobody else believes in them and they are ready to prove the nation wrong.
-Ben!
ben, when you write, “my theory is that no one actually watches the rapids or pays any attention to them,” i felt the same way you did. i’m glad someone has spoken up on THAT issue. when i saw the player-of-the-week voting, i thought to myself, “did nobody watch that rapids game? did nobody see schelotto play?” i think anyone who watched schelotto on saturday saw a damn fine performance, and anybody who had a POTW vote would’ve chosen him. so that made me start to question how many of the voters actually take the time to watch the rapids. in their defense, i don’t have time to watch every mls game every week. anybody who’s choosing not to watch the rapids is missing what’s been a pretty good team so far. if it weren’t for a really bad five-minute stretch against chivas, this team could be undefeated right now. on the other hand, if it weren’t for a lightning strike by casey on saturday, the rapids could be .500.
