Here are a couple of confirmations that defender Julien Baudet will be leaving Crewe Alexandra of England’s League One when his contract runs out.

The BBC reports that The 30-year-old Crewe captain announced last week that he is ending his three-year stint with Crewe Alexandra to join Rapids this summer. “Since the announcement fans have questioned whether their skipper is focused on helping Crewe to safety,” the BBC writes. Read the whole story here.

And the Crewe Chronicle reports that the main factor’s in Baudet’s decisions to join the Rapids were uncertainty about Crewe manager Gudjon Thordarson’s future with the team, the Crewe’s possible relegation to League Two, the lack of a contract offer to stay with the team and “a switch of lifestyle … for him and his family.” Read that story here.

U.S. OPEN CUP-DATE: Another piece of the puzzle was solved Wednesday when defending champion D.C. United defeated visiting FC Dallas 2-0 in a play-in game in Washington. United will face the winner of Wednesday’s play-in game between San Jose and the Red Bulls. The Rapids, meanwhile, await the winner of Tuesday’s Sounders-RSL match in Tukwila, Wash. Here’s a bracket of the MLS play-in teams. And below is a highlight video from the D.C. United-Dallas match.

MLS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Josh Wolff, who scored two goals for Kansas City in the final 12 minutes of a 2-2 tie with Chicago was named the league’s top player this week by the North American Soccer Reporters. I voted for Wolff for first place and Wizards goalkeeper Kevin Hartman for second place. Here’s a link to a video of some of Hartman’s saves.

AND FINALLY: Gazette.net, the online arm of a group of weekly community newspapers serving Montgomery, Frederick, Prince George’s and Carroll counties in Maryland, writes a preview to Real Maryland’s 2009 season.
