Top 10 Real Salt Lake attendances

The energetic support that Real Salt Lake’s fans showed on Saturday night has inspired me to take a look at the top 10 crowds in the short history of that franchise:
Total: date, opponent (significance)
45,511: Aug. 12, 2006, Real Madrid (it was Real Madrid, stupid)
40,589: June 4, 2005, FC Dallas (doubleheader with U.S. men’s national team taking on Costa Rica in a World Cup qualifier)
26,391: Sept. 20, 2008, Chivas USA (final game at Rice-Eccles Stadium)
25,571: May 3, 2008, Los Angeles Galaxy (Beckham)
25,287: April 16, 2005, Colorado Rapids (it was the Rapids, stupid … also first home game ever)
24,633: Sept. 19, 2007, Los Angeles Galaxy (despite no Beckham!)
22,515: Oct. 7, 2006, Houston Dynamo (chance to make playoffs in home finale)
20,752: July 4, 2006, Chivas USA (sparklers, firecrackers and bottle rockets)
20,751: July 4, 2007, Toronto FC (smoke bombs, roman candles and “crackling jumbo ground bloom”)
20,227: July 22, 2006, FC Dallas (Pioneer Day)
Note that after drawing 20,752 on Independence Day in 2006, the attendance total dropped to 20,751 the next season. Apparently, one fan was protesting that Lee Greenwood’s “Proud to be an American” would not be dropped from the postgame fireworks soundtrack in favor of “4th of July” by X.
