Posters, logos, Nico and more!
The Rapids have taken their official team photo for 2009, and the team will be selling it at home games.
Fans will be able to get their hands on the team poster, which features the photo on a thick-stock poster, starting Saturday.
Members of the Rapids Academy will be selling the team posters at all gates of the stadium at all games this season at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. You can get one with a $5.00 donation to the Rapids Academy.
The Rapids Undercurrent has more on the subject.
RAPIDS RESERVES: Gregory Richardson scored the lone goal on Wednesday as the Rapids’s reserve team beat the Real Colorado Foxes 1-0. University of Denver goalkeeper Joe Willis played the full 90 for Real Colorado. Thanks to the Rapids’ Twitter feed for this one.
STAY TUNED: According to the Sounders’ Web site, Freddie Ljungberg is day to day. He had been sidelined by a migraine. We’ll have to wait and see if he makes the trip to Colorado for Saturday’s fixture.
U.S. OPEN CUP VIDEO: Here are the highlights from D.C. United’s 5-3 Open Cup play-in victory against the Red Bulls from Wednesday night.
U.S. OPEN CUP AUDIO: The good folks over at Big Soccer have dug up some great news about the Rapids’ U.S. Open Cup play-in match against Seattle on Tuesday. GoSounders.com has reported that the team’s Web site wil offer a radio broadcast of the match. Here’s the official announcement.
NICO, NICO, OH, OH, OH, NICO: Former Rapids draft pick Nico Colaluca tells MLSnet.com that he had a better chance to crack the lineup under former coach Fernando Clavijo than current coach Gary Smith: ”It was going well during my rookie year. Then I picked up a little injury here and there, and it set me back a little bit,” Colaluca said. “Obviously, Fernando left and a new guy came in. We just didn’t see eye to eye.” Read the whole story, by Revs beat writer Kyle McCarthy, here.
IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN IT: Major League Soccer has a gallery of some of the logos that teams in the league have used. Remember this old L.A. Galaxy logo? The MLS gallery is not a complete collection of defunct logos; for instance, it doesn’t have any Rapids logos. But it’s darn cool. Check it out here.
OMAR’S ASSISTS: SportsJamaica.com caught up with Rapids striker Omar Cummings. He says he’s not taking anybody by surprise, which is forcing him to pass the ball more. “Teams are definitely keying on me. They are not allowing me to get behind them. They are forcing me wide or dropping off and becoming more compact.” Read the whole story here.
WORST SOCCER MOVIE EVER: I’m still soliciting suggestions for the worst soccer movie of all time. Was it “Bend it like Beckham”? Does a movie like “Superbad” qualify for such a list (remember when Josh ran onto the field while Evan was playing a game? The jerk on Evan’s team complains, “We’re down by two points.” Nobody calls goals “points” in soccer). Give me your suggestions. Tell me who you are, where you are and why your movie is the worst. Send your suggestions to ColoradoSoccerNow@gmail.com.
FOURTH OF JULY SAMPLING: The Rapids announced today that The Samples will perform after the fixture against the Fire on July 4. The show will mark the first time The Samples will be performing since the group disbanded nearly two years ago. The last live performance by the band was New Year’s Eve 2007. The annual fireworks, which once again will be the largest display in Colorado, will follow the in-stadium concert. Before the game, a festival will be held outside the south end of the stadium starting at 5 p.m. featuring live bands, kids’ activities, a beer garden and games. The Rapids hold an 11-1-1 record on games played on the Fourth of July.
REMEMBER ROBERTO BROWN? Well, Canada.com does, and it has a story about him being on team No. 12: the Montreal Impact. Read all about it here.
SLIM PICKENS? Ives Galarcep says the pool of goalkeepers for the U.S. national team isn’t as deep as it once was. But he suggests the Rapids’ Matt Pickens might be in line for some duty with the first squad. Check out his comments on Pickens and 10 other players “who could emerge with their first U.S. national team caps in the coming months” here.
