National team calls on Casey

Colorado Rapids forward Conor Casey has been added to the United States’ roster for Saturday’s match against Honduras at Solider Field in Chicago.
Casey, the Major League Soccer player of the month for May, has nine career caps with the national team, the most recent in a 2-0 qualifying victory against Guatemala on Nov. 19 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.
Casey has been added as reinforcement pending the availability of Brian Ching, who aggravated a hamstring injury this week and did not dress for Wednesday night’s 3-1 loss at Costa Rica.
Casey joins Rapids’ captain Pablo Mastroeni, who is already with the Nats. Both will miss Colorado’s regular-season match against their Rocky Mountain Cup rivals Real Salt Lake on Saturday at Rio Tinto Stadium.

ugh for my trip to SLC…but good for him. If he’s gone, i hope he plays (and doesn’t get hurt.)
oh yeah, so what does the Rapids forward line look like Sat night? Ross Schunk (sp?) in? some other formation? 4-5-1 with Cooke in for offense?
if casey gets in for the Nats, i’d bet it’ll be in the final 30. if they’re tied or trailing, they could use him out of desperation. if they’re leading by a wide margin, maybe it’s a test run for him. if it’s close and the U.S. wants to protect a lead, i doubt we’ll see him.
THAT’S a good question. and, unfortunately, if i asked smith directly, i doubt he’d give a straight answer. i’ve tried to get a preview of his starting lineup before, and it was no dice. i know he likes jacob peterson. the thing about cooke’s game, though, is that it just lost its favorite target. but we’ve seen peterson score on assists from cooke before. remember that brilliant goal against Chivas USA in 2006 where cooke, back to goal along the right sideline, chipped the ball backward over his head to himself, spun around the defender then streaked up the touchline? he crossed to peterson, who hip-checked the ball into the net for the tying goal. there’s always hope, wahleyed!
here’s an in-depth look at cookie’s current situation:

you know what’s interesting … people have been clamoring for Frankenstein down in Dallas, whatshisname …. Kenny Cooper (had to google him!), and Casey seems to kinda leapfrogged him.
i think it’s cuz casey is red-friggin-hot right now. i think cooper is a wonderful player, and he’d do well on the national team: size, lungs, heart, skills. that’s a good package. i’d rather see him on the pitch than dempsey.
Casey IS hot, but Frankenstein has had similiar hotstreaks that haven’t results in callups.
