Nats notes: Casey starts it! Bocanegra wins it!

Another collection of observations from Saturday night’s 2-1 U.S. victory over Honduras in a World Cup qualifier in Chicago. Let’s get right to it:

LASTING IMAGE OF HONDURAS’ FIRST GOAL: Dempsey’s embarrassing dipsey-doodle backheel move that utterly failed.

TERRIBLE CALL: Yes, I’m a homer, but that was a foul on Ricardo Clark in the 38th minute in the penalty box. Should’ve been a PK. No doubt. Defender got all body.

LASTING IMAGE OF AMERICA’S FIRST GOAL: Spectacular strike by Donovan in the 43rd minute. Big-time shot into the upper part of the net.

LASTING IMAGE OF AMERICA’S SECOND GOAL: Harkes’ comment: “heart of a lion.” It took real guts and real heart for Bocanegra to dive head-first at foot level right in front of the Honduran goal. THAT was heart. That’s what everybody was clamoring for after Wednesday’s ugliness. Good work, Carlos.

IS IT GREEDY OF ME … to think that Donovan’s goal at the end of the first half should’ve been the second PK of the game for the Nats?

NICE HUSTLE: Good work by Donovan in the 23rd minute. Chased down in the corner, he got right back up to fight for the ball. He won it back, and it led to a shot by Casey, who blasted it high.

THE INTER-MA-WEB: I had a blast on Twitter with everybody on Saturday night. It was like having a hundred color commentators right there with me in the soccer sanctum, er, living room. Honduras was the No. 3 trend topic on Twitter just after halftime. USMNT was No. 10 by the 78th minute.

NEW DIGS? Rob Stone and Lalas appeared to be in a different studio on Saturday night. But wherever you are, please stop using NBA metaphors to discuss the U.S. men’s national team.

SO HOW DID THE RAPIDS DO? Pablo and Casey started. Casey didn’t do anything to harm his chances of future service with the national team, but he didn’t distinguish himself either. Pablo didn’t do anything to get the haters on the Internet off his back. Not a bad game from Pablo at all.

Sorry George. That was two straight bad games for Pablo.he’s being exposed as too slow fir the international game. Fact: the US took over once he left. It wasn’t a coincidence. Fact.
