Casey among 23 called in to camp for Confederations Cup

Conor Casey, the leading scorer in Major League Soccer, is among 23 Americans called to camp by coach Bob Bradley to compete in the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup from June 14-28 in South Africa.
Casey has 10 career caps with the national team; the most recent in a 2-1 victory over Honduras on Wednesday in World Cup qualifying.
The U.S. opens against Italy on June 15 and then faces Brazil on June 18. The United States finishes group play on June 21 against Egypt. All 16 matches will be televised.
The U.S. will depart June 8 for South Africa, setting up camp in Tshwane/Pretoria.
The Confederations Cup is made up of the six champions of each regional confederation, the defending World Cup champion and the host nation of the 2010 World Cup. The U.S. qualified by winning its second consecutive CONCACAF Gold Cup. In front of 60,000 fans, the U.S. erased a 1-0 deficit and defeated Mexico 2-1 on June 24, 2007, in Chicago.
After the Confederations Cup, the U.S. returns home to defend the Gold Cup title from July 3-26.
And the next World Cup qualifier for the U.S. will be Aug. 12 at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.

I keep hearing rumors of F signing(s) for the Rapids — maybe one soon? heard any names? speculation? guesses?
i haven’t heard any, but it’s been awhile since i spoke to smith about signings. nick, over at WeWantRapidman, was speculating that the rapids have been working the phones, but no names. the last time i discussed signings with smith was a little more than a month ago. smith didn’t seem frustrated, but he said something to the effect that he’s not being persuasive eough on the phone. it’s funny: max bretos mentioned that stan kroenke hasn’t opened up the pursestrings for the rapids. but i don’t think that’s accurate. they spent a lot of money on christian gomez, and i think it was a good move. it didn’t work out, but they actively sought a playmaking midfielder. that was one of the missing pieces. they asked, they got the green light, and they paid. the pursestrings were not locked. i think the rapids are simply being careful with their money. being wasteful can kill a franchise.
