it's a neat idea, but i'd much rather see the fan two rows down from me wearing it in the stands.

Oh, I agree that it has nothing to do with soccer. The first few scarves went to obscure businesspeople who had a hand in the establishment of the franchise. They got polite claps, but nobody really cared. The previous one went to the local WNBA franchise and this one to Romar. Also, I believe Holmgren got one? I think they decided that establishing the Sounders in the local sports community is a better use of the scarf. Certainly the crowd gets more up for it.

ok, here's my point:
if the rapids were going to present a golden scarf each game, i'd be offended if they gave it to a representative of the broncos, rockies or nuggets. if somebody from CU or one of the other colleges in the state was awarded the scarf, i'd hope it was for something related to soccer. othewise, i'd like to see it given to "members of our community who are either part of the soccer scene or have done remarkable things for society," which is what the sounders claim is the intent. the huskies coach probably has received enough recognition around seattle that the sounders could do more good by honoring a regular joe, not a paycheck-drawing member of the local athletic community whose shelf is probably full of trophies anyway.

<blockquote>
I’d bet $5 that half of the soccer fans at Qwest Field on Sunday were wondering why the Sounders were paying tribute to a college basketball team
</blockquote>

And you'd lose it. The overlap between Sounders fandom and Huskies fandom is large.
