Conor Casey has been added to the U.S. national team’s CONCACAF Gold Cup roster, according to the Colorado Rapids.

FIFA has announced a provision that allows any team participating in the FIFA Confederations Cup and the CONCACAF Gold Cup in the same year to expand its Gold Cup roster from 23 to 30 players. The provision was provided because of the circumstances teams face when playing back-to-back tournaments.

U.S. coach Bob Bradley has added seven players to the roster: Forwards Jozy Altidore and Conor Casey; midfielders Ricardo Clark, Benny Feilhaber and Sacha Kljestan; defender Jonathan Bornstein; and goalkeeper Brad Guzan will be eligible for selection during the tournament. But the U.S. will not have all seven players present for each Gold Cup match.

The exact schedule for these players will be announced as it becomes available. Only 18 players will be eligible to dress for any game.

Casey joins teammate Colin Clark, who was a member of the original 23-man U.S. Gold Cup roster.

He should stay with the Rapids. Ching and KC is sufficient.

he won’t be there for all the games … and honestly, he didn’t do anything in the confed cup to earn a return trip. the rapids can keep him.

i think that might be bradley’s point: he didn’t give casey much of an opportunity in south africa. so if he can work him into a gold up game or two, it might be a reward for conor’s patience.

I just didn’t think he looked good in the limited time he had. he was in to fill a role and I wasn’t impressed. hopefully he’ll make the most of the next opportunity he gets, though. can never have enough depth.

What baffles me is the timing of this. Were Warner & company too busy with their new creative corruption initiative to realize the US was in the Confed Cup and in the Gold Cup? Seems a bit late for them to come up with that rule.
