Casey picked for All-Star Game’s first 11

Rapids striker Conor Casey has been chosen as one of the 2009 MLS All-Star Game’s first 11 players.
He is one of seven first-time members of the team. The game will be played at 7:30 p.m. (Mountain Time) July 29 at Rio Tinto Stadium, in Sandy, Utah. The MLS All-Stars will face Everton of the English Premier League. The game will be televised live on ESPN and Galavision.
Galaxy forward Landon Donovan is the other forward on the team.
Casey is third in goal scoring in the league with eight, and Donovan has scored six goals. Leading scorer Guillermo Barros Schelotto of the Columbus Crew, who has 10 goals in 17 games, was selected to play. Fredy Montero, the league’s second-leading scorer, with nine goals, was not picked for the first 11. He is likely to be named as a reserve.
Next Monday, Dynamo head coach Dominic Kinnear and his staff’s selections will be announced. Two commissioner’s selections will complete the 18-man roster. Kinnear earned the honor of coaching the MLS side by leading his team to the highest points-per-game average in the league through games on June 28.
The first 11 players received the most votes at their respective positions from four groups – fans, players, the media and coaches/general managers. Schelotto led all players in combined voting, followed by Donovan and Casey.
The first 11 are not necessarily the starters. Kinnear will select the starters based on player availability and tactical considerations. If any of the first 11 are unavailable because of injury, international duty or other commitments, Kinnear will select alternates for the game-day roster.
