Rapids waive Cooke, sign Scottish midfielder Jamie Smith

The Colorado Rapids have waived midfielder Terry Cooke to make room on the roster for Scottish midfielder Jamie Smith.
Cooke leaves the Rapids after five seasons in Colorado, during which he appeared in 106 games, scored four goals and registered 34 assists. He had played 10 games for the Rapids this season, with one goal and one assist.
Cooke tied his career high of 12 assists in 2008 (third-best in Major League Soccer that year) and was the league’s player of the week after recording a goal and two assists in the season opener against Los Angeles.
Cooke was named the Rapids’ Playmaker of the Year in 2006 for being instrumental in the Rapids’ attack.
He made his MLS debut against Salt Lake on April 16, 2005. He joined the Rapids after spending two years with English Second Division team Sheffield Wednesday. The Birmingham, England, native developed his skills in the Manchester United system.
According to information from the Major League Soccer Players Union, Cooke was due to earn as much as $192,500 in 2009.
Smith joins the Rapids following an extensive professional career abroad. Smith’s travels began in Scotland with Celtic, followed by stints with Dutch side ADO Den Haag and most recently Scottish Premier League club Aberdeen FC. Touted as a winger with a direct style, Smith has also earned two Scottish national team caps.
Rapids coach Gary Smith commented on the transactions at the Rapids Undercurrent.
And Nick Thomas at WeWantRapidman posted a heartfelt goodbye to the English midfielder on Tuesday. Nick was all over this story, and he wrote this on Sunday: “The unfortunate Cookie will surely be on his way next week and all true fans will miss him.”

I liked Cooke. He should have stayed.
