Burger King sponsorship of Spanish club Getafe takes creepy turn

I’ve seen this a few places on the Internet, and it has nothing to do with soccer in Colorado (other than presence of Burger King franchises in this state). But I’m going to publish a link to England’s Daily Mail, which has a story and photos of the King’s new sponsorship of Getafe, a professional team in Madrid, Spain.
If you don’t know about it, follow the link. Burger King’s sponsorship includes a large logo on the chest of the jersey but also a clever twist that many people are finding creepy.
I love it. I love the whole edgy King ad campaign. My wife loves the commercial where the King blows an air horn to wake up a sleeping guy, a la “Jackass.” Even back to those original commercials where folks woke up on bed to find the King next to them — they were just a little off balance, and that’s what made them special.
So here’s the link to the Daily Mail’s story about the Getafe campaign. Make sure to click on the picture of the instructions; it will enlarge, so you can read the whole thing.
BAUDET UPDATE: Newly signed Rapids defender Julien Baudet was scheduled for surgery on his broken left wrist today. He is expected to be sidelined four to six weeks. The Rapids lost Baudet in the 33rd minute of their 4-0 victory over New York on Saturday. He collided with Sinisa Ubiparipovic and snapped his wrist when he tried to break his fall.
DU NORD SPEAKS!: That’s right, Brucio (aka Bruce McGuire of the du Nord football blog) will be making his match broadcasting debut as the sidekick to Chris Lindholm as the USL’s Minnesota Thunder hosts the Portland Timbers at noon Saturday (Mountain time). The game, like all USL First Division games, is broadcast live and free of charge on the Internet at USL Live. Brucio is requesting that all interested parties tune and critique his performance, as well as that of his favorite team, the Thunder.
THE INACTIVE ALL-STARS: In accordance with Major League Soccer’s collective bargaining agreement with the players, the league released the names of all players who are named MLS All-Stars in 2009. After the 18-man active roster and inactive First XI selections, the remaining All-Stars are named according to the total weighted voting by MLS players, coaches and GMs, media and fans. Here’s the inactive roster of players who are 2009 All-Stars: Pat Onstad (Houston), Donovan Ricketts (Los Angeles), Jonathan Bornstein (Chivas USA), Frankie Hejduk (Columbus), Jimmy Conrad (Kansas City), Guillermo Barros Schelotto (Columbus), Shalrie Joseph (New England), Dwayne De Rosario (Toronto), Ricardo Clark (Houston), Paulo Nagamura (Chivas USA), Amado Guevara (Toronto), Brian McBride (Chicago), Brian Ching (Houston), Juan Pablo Angel (New York).
HOUSTON TO HOST 2010 ALL-STAR GAME: The league announced that Houston will host the 2010 MLS All-Star Game next summer. The match will be at Robertson Stadium or Reliant Stadium, and the MLS All-Stars will take on a high-profile international club. ESPN suggested on Wednesday that it probably will be a club from Mexico.
PRONUNCIATION OF 2010: I found it interesting in Wednesday’s telecast of the “two thousand nine” MLS All-Star Game that ESPN’s Rob Stone nearly said “two thousand ten” when talking about next year’s match in Houston. But he cut himself off and changed it to “twenty ten,” as if that’s the style that ESPN has chosen for the pronunciation of the years to come. So it’ll be “twenty eleven” and “twenty twelve” instead of “two thousand ten” and “two thousand eleven.” Interesting. And ESPN’s influence in modern American culture certainly will have some effect on how people pronounce it in everyday speaking.
MY VOTES FOR PLAYER OF THE MONTH: I voted for defender Wilman Conde of the Chicago Fire for player of the month and selected goalkeeper Matt Reis of New England as my second choice. Conde, an All-Star, was a factor in the Fire’s three consecutive shutouts to close out July. He scored the winning goal against the Rapids on July Fourth and added an assist July 18 against the San Jose Earthquakes in a 2-0 win. Reis had a 0.25 goals-against average in July and a 2-1-1 record with three consecutive shutouts and a 351-minute scoreless streak. He made a career-high 11 saves against Kansas City and had eight saves at Houston to snap the Dynamo’s 17-match home undefeated streak. I nearly voted Reis first, but the players’ positions affected my decision. It’s not often that a defender gets an opportunity to be voted player of the month. So I gave Conde a chance. I wouldn’t be surprised if Reis, or one of the other nominees, won. The other nominees were Alecko Eskandarian, Landon Donovan, William Hesmer, Jason Garey, Cuauhtemoc Blanco, Jon Busch, Chad Barrett, Kasey Keller and Jeff Cunningham.
AZTECA IN AUGUST: On Wednesday, Aug. 12, the U.S. men’s national team will play one of its biggest matches in several years: a World Cup qualifier at Mexico’s daunting 120,000-capacity Estadio Azteca in the District Federal. Because of the importance of this match and the number of U.S. fans who will be traveling to that game, Adam Spangler of This Is American Soccer spearheaded the idea to create a U.S. traveling fan’s guide to Mexico City. Andy Wattenhofer contributed a great deal of information collected from his two previous trips to qualifiers at Azteca. Adam and Bruce McGuire of the du Nord football blog added small touches, and they all vowed to release this as quickly and efficiently as possible. Check out their guide “azteca in august” here.

I love the BK shirt! I mean, it’s ugly, but I like the concept.
A video game just did this with the shirt being a zombie head on the inside. that was very cool, too.
I actually have a friend who works on the Burger King account for their advertising company. When I saw that story I asked my friend if he can get me one and he was told by a co-worker in Spain that there were only 100 of the jerseys with the King’s face on the inside made. Maybe he got bad info, but I don’t think the standard Getafe kit will come with a face on the inside.
I cant wait for the game.
