A fresh batch of news tidbits for the Colorado soccer fan. …

PREKI FINED: Major League Soccer fined Chivas USA head coach Preki Radosavljevic $1,000 for inappropriate conduct directed toward match officials following Chivas USA’s 3-1 U.S. Open Cup loss to the Charleston Battery on June 30. The Rapids host Chivas at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Read more about the game at the Rapids’ Web site and at WeWantRapidman.

FAITH AND FUTBOL: On Aug. 30, the Colorado Rapids will present a free postgame concert featuring Christian national recording artists Wavorly and Everfound. Also, Jordan Shelton will sing the national anthem before the start of the Rapids’ match against Houston. In addition to the concert, the Faith and Futbol event will include keynote speakers, including Rapids team chaplain Brad Kenney and others. Fans will be able to participate in a question-and-answer session with the speakers as well.

MORE ON TERRY COOKE: At the Class VI Web site, Mark posts some follow-up perspective on the Rapids’ release of Terry Cooke. It’s interesting reading. Scroll down past a Q&A with Cory Gibbs and a Columbus postgame wrap-up, and you’ll see it.

ALUMNI NEWS: Mark C. Young has compiled a fantastic roundup of exploits of former MLS players at the MLS Web site. His report is full of news about former Rapids. He’s got news on Dedi Ben Dayan (Hapoel Tel Aviv) and Tom McManus (Derry City) in the Europa League and Hunter Freeman (IK Start) and Thiago Martins (FK Bodo Glimt) in the Norwegian Tippeligaen. He reports that McManus, who has been battling injuries, scored against the Shamrock Rovers. And he’s got tons of updates on other players, like former Dallas agitator Juan Toja, who is playing for Steaua Bucharest, in Romania. Toja was always a thorn for Dallas’ opponents, but he was fun to watch. Check out the entire report here.

BEHIND THE SCENES: We’ve had some recent goings-on her at the Web site. Just yesterday we added Guernsey to our roll call of nations. What? You’ve never heard of Guernsey? Guernsey is one of the Channel Islands. It’s a possession of Britain but isn’t part of the European Union. Here’s some more, from the Guernsey tourism Web site. And you can always see our roll call of nations at our About Us page. I’ve also added a bunch of schedules for college teams in Colorado to our Schedules page. And I’ve added links to those schools’ homepages at our Links page. And we’re not done yet. There are still more to add, and they should be in place soon. I hope these tools are useful to you.

MICRO-NOTES: Former Rapids striker Jeff Cunningham was selected MLS player of the week for his four-goal performance for Dallas last week; the league sent out this quote about the Columbus Crew from Rapids coach Gary Smith in one of its media newsletters: ““That’s why they won the championship. They squeak out 1-nil games, and we’re still learning”; no one in MLS has a better one-timer than Dwayne De Rosario; Galaxy forward Landon Donovan was voted player of the month for July (I voted for Wilman Conde of Chicago).

    Hello!

Thank you for mentioning my favorite former FCD player, Juan Toja. :) He has been doing well with Steaua FC but was recently sidelined for about a month with an ankle sprain. His team, however, will face the Irish team St. Patrick’s in the play-off round of the Europa Cup and should advance to the group stage without too much trouble. Although I had great fun watching him play in Dallas, he was very lucky and smart to leave when he had the chance last year. :-)
