The University of Denver men’s soccer recruiting class was ranked No. 18 in the nation by College Soccer News, marking the second straight season that DU cracked the Top 20.

The Pioneers welcome seven student-athletes, including a pair from the nation’s top 75, the Gatorade Colorado High School Player of the Year and a member of Canada’s U-20 national team.

Drew Beckie (Highlands Ranch), Nick Brant (Denver), Nathan Sackeyfio (Seattle), Blake Shannon (Houston), Alex Tarnoczi (Castle Rock), Mark Weigand (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and Josh Wren (Tulsa, Okla.) join Denver this fall. Additionally, Jesse Henderson (Detroit) transferred from San Francisco.

Denver’s class ranked No. 19 last year and featured a pair of All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation second-team members in Jarod Stigall (Plano, Texas) and Sam Garza (Highland Village, Texas), who also took home the 2008 MPSF Newcomer of the Year award and earned a spot on the United States U-20 national team, which will compete at the 2009 U-20 World Cup in Egypt.

Including his time as a Wake Forest assistant coach, Pioneers coach Bobby Muuss has helped assemble Top 20 recruiting classes in each of the past eight seasons.

Bobby Muuss and his staff are doing a quite phenomenal job at DU. With the new soccer stadium coming in soon, this team could really go somewhere in the next few years.
