The University of Denver men’s soccer team received 47 points and five of eight first-place votes to top the 2009 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s soccer preseason coaches’ poll.

The Pioneers won their first-ever MPSF championship last year and advanced to the NCAA tournament with an 8-1-1 conference mark.

New Mexico was picked second with 44 points and three first-place votes.

San Jose State was tabbed for third, after finishing better than .500 in conference play in 2008.

UNLV and Sacramento State were fourth and fifth respectively, while Seattle, Air Force and California State-Bakersfield rounded out the field.

The Pioneers went 10-7-2 overall last season. Denver returns 16 letter winners, including first-team all-conference goalkeeper Joe Willis, second-team all-MPSF defender Kris Banghart and 2008 MPSF Newcomer of the Year Sam Garza.
