No. 15 Rockhurst shuts out UCCS
A record crowd of 878 at the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs saw the Mountain Lions drop a 1-0 match to No. 15 Rockhurst on Friday night.
Walter Moskop scored in the 53rd minute to disappoint a crowd that staged a march to Mountain Lion Stadium before the match.
More than 400 UCCS students gathered at the campus’ housing village then walked down Austin Bluffs Parkway and up North Nevada Avenue to the stadium. Once there, other students and fans joined the marchers for a tailgate party. The gathering entered the stadium 15 minutes before kickoff, quickly filling the stands and much of the adjoining grass berm.
The crowd nearly doubled UCCS’ previous record for attendance at a soccer match, 445 against Fort Lewis on Oct. 26, 2002.
The Mountain Lions rewarded the audience by playing the ranked opponent to a standstill through the first 52 minutes.
Then, in the 53rd, Moskop sent a ball toward the far post from about 40 yards out. Goalkeeper Adam Liszewski retreated, but the shot floated beyond his reach and into the upper corner.
Rockhurst outshot UCCS 13-10 in the season opener for both teams. Liszewski made three saves, and Kyle Clawson made two saves for Rockhurst.
