Pioneers tie No. 13 Illinois 1-1
Freshman Kaitlin Bast scored her first goal for the University of Denver women’s soccer team as the Pioneers earned a 1-1 tie against No. 13 Illinois Sunday afternoon in Denver.
Bast scored in the fourth minute on the first shot of the match; seniors Mariah Johnston and Lizzy Carlson were credited with assists.
The Pioneers held the one-goal advantage until junior Cory Steigerwald scored the equalizer for the Illini in the 80th minute, forcing overtime.
Illinois recorded one shot in the first overtime period; and both teams had strong pushes in the second. With 4:50 left in the second overtime, senior Emily Stewart blocked Illinois’ Jordan Hilbrands’ open-net shot. Hilbrands had scored both goals in a 2-1 victory over the University of Colorado on Friday.
Illinois outshot DU 23-5, and Stewart’s effort was indicative of the Denver defensive play on Sunday. Freshman goalkeeper Lara Campbell had six saves.
Next, the Pioneers will travel to Boulder to face CU at 4 p.m. Friday and Colgate at 11 a.m. Sunday.
