The New Mexico State women’s soccer team scored two goals in the final seven minutes to escape with a 2-1 victory over Colorado State University-Pueblo on Friday in Pueblo.

The winning goal — with 1 minute, 4 seconds to play — was controversial. Nina Yanes’ shot from about 25 yards out hit the crossbar and ricocheted downward. Officials ruled that the ball crossed the goal line, awarding the visitors what would be the winning goal.

The victory was the first in program history for New Mexico State, a Division I start-up in its first season of competition.

The ThunderWolves led 1-0 as late as the 83rd minute of the match, but a penalty kick goal by freshman midfielder Jazmin Cardoso undid CSU-Pueblo’s shutout bid.

Brittani Montgomery scored for the ThunderWolves late in the first half.

CSU-Pueblo goalkeeper Randi Walters faced 11 shots.
