Josi Heer’s scored in the 58th minute and the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs’ made the goal stand up as the Mountain Lions beat St. Cloud State 1-0 Friday evening in Colorado Springs. The UCCS defense of sweeper Lindsay Link, stopper Ashley Collins and marking backs Lauren Hall and Jessika Williams held St. Cloud State to just four shots in the match, and goalkeeper Ashley Armstrong needed to make only one save to earn her first career shutout.

St. Cloud had just one real scoring threat, a through-ball to a forward who wound up with a one-on-one against Armstrong. She immediately recognized the threat, however, and charged out to smother the ball.

The victory was the regular-season opener for UCCS.

St. Cloud State fell to 1-1.

After a scoreless first half, Heer notched the Mountain Lions’ first goal of the season just shy of the hour mark. Jennifer Joern centered the ball from the right sideline, forcing Huskies goalkeeper Molly Bender to come off her line. Bender could not clear the ball, and Heer, a sophomore from Henniker, N.H., smacked it into the open net.
