Breidenbach, Pioneers break through in overtime
A quick roundup of the weekend’s games for Colorado’s college soccer teams:
WOMEN
UNIVERSITY OF DENVER 1, COLGATE 0 2OT: Senior midfielder Kelli Breidenbach scored on an assist from Mariah Johnston in the second overtime Sunday afternoon in the Colorado Soccer Classic at Prentup Field in Boulder. It was the third consecutive match of the tournament to go to two overtime periods. DU outshot the Raiders 23-4. Denver’s best chance before halftime came in the third minute, when sophomore midfielder Bria Beardsley drilled a shot into the crossbar near the upper left corner. In the first overtime, Colgate goalkeeper Ashley Walsh made a diving stop on DU freshman forward Kaitlin Bast. The Pioneers (3-1-1) head to Colorado Springs next weekend for the Colorado College Invitational. Denver faces Kansas at 1:30 p.m. Friday and Texas Christian at noon Sunday.
OREGON 2, COLORADO 1: Jen Stoltenberg scored twice as Oregon beat CU Sunday afternoon and finished the Colorado Soccer Classic here Sunday afternoon with a victory and a tie. Stoltenberg scored once in each half. In the 15th minute, she carried the ball into the middle of the box, dribbled around a pair of Buffalo defenders and fired a hard shot that glanced off the crossbar and bounced into the net for the 1-0 lead. Stoltenberg gave the Ducks a 2-0 lead in the 59th minute. The Buffaloes responded less than four minutes later as freshman Shaye Marshall trapped a cross from sophomore Kelly Butler at the top of the goal box and blasted a shot into the back of the net. The goal was the first of Marshall’s career.
Colorado hosts No. 21 Utah at 4 p.m. Friday.
WASHINGTON 3, COLORADO COLLEGE 1: The Tigers held Washington without a shot for 55 minutes, but Washington exploded for three goals in less than 10 minutes in the second half during the final match of the Husky/Nike Invitational. CC grabbed the lead in the second minute of the second half. Freshman midfielder Brennan O’Connell snapped a scoreless deadlock with the first goal of her collegiate career. But Washington’s Nikki Murray tied the game on a free kick from 25 yards out at 55:26 then set up sophomore Kelli Stewart’s winner with a well-placed corner kick at 60:05. Freshman forward Jessie Young added an insurance goal at 65:02. The Tigers dropped to 2-2, and Washington improved to 3-1.
REGIS 4, WINONA STATE 0: Jordan Miller scored twice and Heather Thomas and Lexi Tagen had one each as the Rangers cruised on Friday in Denver. Chelsea Bokan had two assists. Rosie Campbell registered four saves for the victory.
MEN
METRO STATE 4, NORTHEASTERN STATE: The Roadrunners cruised on Sunday in Wichita Falls, Texas. Metro improved to 2-1 as Scott Grode, Steven Emory and Ri Armstrong scored; the team’s final goal came on an own goal. Grode got Metro State on the board just 29 seconds into the game with his third goal of the season, scoring unassisted off a turnover in the box. Emory headed a pass from Tyler Hambrick into the net in the 30th minute to give Metro State a 2-0 lead. Metro State took a 3-0 lead just over a minute later when Armstrong had a one-on-one with RiverHawk goalkeeper Brendon Lindsay, who stopped the initial shot. But Armstrong put the rebound past Lindsay for the goal. Freshman Marc Herschberger tallied the assist for his first career point. Norteastern State got on the scoreboard four minutes later, when Harrison Kutz scored off Zach Schmoker’s corner kick. Dominique Griffith made two saves for the Roadrunners, who outshot Northeastern State 19-7 and had an 11-2 advantage on corner kicks. Metro State travels to Washington for games against Western Washington on Thursday and Seattle Pacific on Saturday.
DUKE 2, DENVER 0: Cole Grossman gave the Blue Devils the lead in the 69th minute and assisted on Josh Bienenfeld’s insurance goal in the 84th. Duke outshot DU 18-5 in the Pioneers’ second game of the Duke/Nike Classic. The Pioneers return to Denver for their home opener against Dayton on Saturday.
EASTERN NEW MEXICO 2, UCCS 1: A defensive breakdown in overtime wasted a gutsy effort by UCCS on Sunday in Colorado Springs. With 58 seconds remaining in overtime, Kal Herbert sent a looping corner kick across the field. It hit ground near the far post, where Diego Santos was making a run without a marking defender. The missed mark was costly, as an undefended Santos one-timed the ball into the net. UCCS played a man down for more than 53 minutes. In the 12th minute, UCCS midfielder Mike Mason was given a yellow card for throwing an elbow at ENMU goalkeeper Alistair Caldwell. Just 12 seconds later, an aggressive tackle got Mason his second yellow card and was ejected. Eastern New Mexico capitalized on that advantage in the 38th minute. Rodriguez took a pass from David Kim and scored on a near-post shot. The shorthanded Mountain Lions evened the match in the 56th minute. Oladiran was making a far-post run as Ryan Piechowski launched a low crossing pass. The ball skipped past two defenders and found Oladiran, who punched it past Caldwell. The sides became even numerically in the 66th minute, when Caldwell was red-carded for comments made after a foul by the visiting Greyhounds. Caldwell, who made three saves, was replace in goal by Josh Bussen.
DIXIE STATE 1, MESA STATE 0: Just 20 seconds before halftime, Jordan Roylance scored off an assist from Kody Hunter for visiting Dixie State on Sunday in Grand Junction. Mesa outshot Dixie 14-12 but couldn’t get the ball past goalkeeper Josh Tinaglia.
UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS-DALLAS 2, COLORADO COLLEGE 0: The visiting Comets struck for a pair of goals in the second half of their season opener, blanking host CC in a Division III match at Stewart Field. UTD’s Cory Roth snapped a scoreless deadlock in the 70th minute of play, heading a rebound past Tigers keeper Brian Engle just moments after Engle made a spectacular save on a point-blank shot by Brian Shiba. The Comets got an insurance tally by Shiba a little more than 10 minutes later, after each team lost a player to a red card during a minor fracas at the other end of the field. UTD’s Jake Brandon made three stops in recording the shutout.
REGIS 2, NORTHEASTERN STATE 0: Kyle Emge scored an unassisted goal in the first half and assisted on Nathan Kafer’s second-half score as the Rangers shut out Northeastern State on Friday in Wichita Falls, Texas. Wally Fink made five saves en route to the shutout.
