Random notes from the world of soccer in Colorado:

TIGER TOURNAMENT: The Colorado College women’s soccer team hosts the University of Denver, Kansas and Texas Christian on Friday and Sunday. CC faces TCU at 4 p.m. Friday and Kansas at 2:30 p.m. Sunday. The Pioneers meet the Jayhawks at 1:30 Friday and Texas Christian at noon Sunday. Tigers senior forward Emily Beans is in fifth place all time among CC goal scorers with 26 for her career. Junior forward Tiffany Brown has been involved in a dozen winning goals for Colorado College, scoring eight and assisting on four.

RMAC WOMEN’S HONORS: Senior forward Kayla Mitchell of the Colorado School of Mines was named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference’s offensive player of the week. Mitchell had a goal and two assists in two Mines victories. Colorado Christian’s Liana Signorile, a junior goalkeeper, was the league’s defensive player of the week after back-to-back shutouts.

RMAC MEN’S HONORS: Mines freshman goalkeeper Manville Strand, who registered three shutout victories, was selected as the RMAC defensive player of the week. The Oredigger men defeated the University of Mary (3-0), Upper Iowa (2-0) and Missouri S & T (1-0) in nonconference action last week. Corey Cullen of Colorado State-Pueblo scored two goals in two victories and was the offensive player of the week. Cullen got the winning goal against Newman.

WHO WILL BE MVP? Kristian Dyer of ESPNsoccernet recently wrote a piece making MVP predictions for Major League Soccer. He looks at Guillermo Barros Schelotto, Fredy Montero, Kasey Keller, Zach Thornton, Landon Donovan and Shalrie Joseph in particular. Then, in one throw-away sentence at the end, he recognizes the Rapids’ dynamic duo at forward: “Other players, like the Colorado duo of Omar Cummings and Conor Casey, have a chance to make a serious statement as the last winds of the season die down.” The whole story is at the other end of this link.

HANDICAPPING THE RACE: Ridge Mahoney has this to say about the Rapids’ playoff chances: “Upside: Growing maturity of Mehdi Ballouchy and Nick LaBrocca gives Rapids one of the league’s better midfields, and Matt Pickens might steal a game or two down the stretch with clutch goalkeeping. Downside: Mastroeni will also miss the next two games, and those five road games are steep steps to climb.” The whole story is here (if Soccer America likes you; if it doesn’t, it will want you to subscribe).
