Van Lieshout free kick lifts DU over Kansas

A roundup of Friday’s action in Colorado college soccer:

WOMEN
Denver 2, Kansas 1: Freshman midfielder Katy Van Lieshout hit a game-winning goal on a free kick from 28 yards out to give the Pioneers a victory over No. 13 Kansas in the Colorado College Invitational at Stewart Field in Colorado Springs. With 5:44 left in the game, Van Lieshout nailed a free kick into the upper left of the goal. The Pioneers (4-1-1), who fell to Kansas in the first round of the NCAA tournament last season, handed the Jayhawks their first loss of the year. Kansas scored first, but Denver tied it three minutes later, when freshman forward Kaitlin Bast headed in a cross from junior defender Megan Flannery.

Northern Colorado 1, Idaho 0: In Boise, Idaho, Alexsys Tamayo scored past Vandal goalkeeper Liz Boyden on a corner kick from senior Sydney VanderVelde during the Holiday Inn Classic, hosted by Boise State. The Bears dominated possession during the game, firing 16 shots to Idaho’s eight. Sophomore goalkeeper Kirsten Salminen needed only two saves for the shutout.

Colorado College 3, Texas Christian 0: Freshman forward Brittney Lyman struck for the first two goals of her collegiate career as the Tigers snapped a two-game losing skid at Stewart Field. Lyman, an Arvada West High School product who had started for the Tigers in their previous four games, entered Friday’s contest off the bench just prior to a corner kick by sophomore defender Beth Wright midway through the first half. After Lauren Talbot’s header of Wright’s service was blocked in the goal mouth, Lyman pounced on the rebound to give her team a 1-0 lead. Lyman and junior forward Tiffany Brown scored just 4:28 apart early in the second half as CC improved its record to 3-2, including a 3-0 mark at home. CC goalkeeper Caitlin Hulyo made three saves in recording her third career shutout. Colorado College outshot the Horned Frogs by an 18-8.

Regis 5, New Mexico Highlands 1: In their first conference matchup of the season, Jordan Miller scored two goals while Lexi Tagen, Marissa Davis and Shawnee Wood each added one.

Mesa State 5, Adams State 0: The host Mavericks scored five second-half goals in a rout. Natali Koen, Kelly Husky, Kira Brannan, Kelci Crispe, Kaselyn Butters had the goals for Mesa State. Alicia Kahler and Kaitlin Bennett combined on the shutout, while Adams State’s Kirsten Dorsey had 12 saves.

CSU-Pueblo 11, University of the Southwest 0:The Thunderwolves rolled at home. Morgan Purkey scored the hat trick, and Leanne Carberry and Candice Duffy each had two goals. CSU-Pueblo also got goals from Jessa Cook, Sienna Myers, Melissa Christensen and Gabby Gonzales. Randi Walters and Jessica Stumpf each played a half in goal.

MEN
Air Force 1, Belmont 1: Senior Steven Noller scored for the Falcons at Cadet Soccer Stadium. Brandon Tarr scored for the Bruins. The Falcons outshot Belmont 10-4 in the first half but could not Score. Air Force got the ball past Belmont keeper Wes Wray once, but Alex Davis kicked the ball off the line. Noller placed a header just under the crossbar in the 79th minute off a corner kick by senior Kevin Rosser. It was Noller’s first goal of the season and Rosser’s second assist.

CSU-Pueblo 2, Montana State-Billings 1 OT: Erik Andersen scored after a throw-in during the 105th minute to give CSU-Pueblo a victory in overtime. Brenden Hughes scored in the 13th minute on a cross from Robert Kinsey as the Thunderwolves took an early lead.

Westminster College 3, Adams State 1: In Salt Lake City, Westminster scored two early goals, before junior midfielder Chase Talbot cut the lead to one in the 26th minute. Westminster got its third goal in the 84th minute.

Mines 1, Incarnate Word 1: In Austin, Texas, Alex Nass scored his first collegiate goal to tie the game in the 21st minute for the 13th-ranked Orediggers. Philip Wilson tallied the assist. Mines keeper Manville Strand made six saves in 110 minutes.

FROM THURSDAY
Metro State men 2, Western Washington 1 OT: Mike Martinez scored from directly in front of the goal in the 92nd minute as the Roadrunners stunned Western Washington 2-1 in Bellingham, Wash. The Vikings outshot Metro 16-10, but goalkeeper Dominique Griffith made four saves to keep the Roadrunners even through regulation. Martinez then connected on a pass from Tyler Hambrick two yards in front of the net less than two minutes into overtime to win the game for Metro State. Hambrick assisted on both of Metro State’s goals, setting up Ryan Brooks for the first goal of the game in the 12th minute as Brooks got a breakaway past the defense from the left side.
