DU’s Tarnoczi reaps national honors

Another roundup of notable news from the beautiful game in this beautiful state.

HARDWARE GALORE: University of Denver freshman Alex Tarnoczi was selected to the Soccer America Men’s Team of the Week and was named Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Co-Player of the Week. Additionally, Tarnoczi earned a spot on Top Drawer Soccer’s National Team of the Week. Tarnoczi scored the game winning goal in overtime on Friday to give the Pioneers a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over defending Atlantic 10 champion Dayton. And he scored a pair of goals and added an assist in DU’s win over Belmont on Sunday. DU will host the University of Washington at 7 p.m. Sunday at Pioneer Field. Click here for directions.

PIONEERS WOMEN: DU freshman forward Kaitlin Bast was named the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week. Bast scored against Kansas on Friday as DU beat No. 13 Kansas, which had not trailed in a game this season. On Sunday, Bast assisted on the winning goal in the second half against No. 30 Texas Christian. With the victories, Denver jumped to No. 21 in this week’s NSCAA/adidas Division I rankings.

MINES CLIMBS: The Colorado School of Mines men’s soccer team moved up four spots to ninth in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Division II poll. Mines played ninth-ranked Incarnate Word to a 1-1 tie on Friday, Sept. 11th in Austin, Texas on the campus of St. Edward’s University then tied St. Edward’s 1-1 on Sunday. Mines goalkeeper Manville Strand was named RMAC defensive player of the week for the second consecutive week.

TWO BECCAS, TWO AWARDS: Metro State women’s soccer players Becca Mays and Becca Maloney were honored by the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference on Tuesday as the conference’s players of the week. Mays was tops on offense, and Maloney, a goalkeeper, was named defensive player of the week. Mays, a senior forward from San Antonio, recorded her second career hat trick on Friday in a 6-1 win over No. 20 Mines. Maloney, a senior goalkeeper from Colorado Springs, allowed just one goal in two wins during the weekend.

ON MONDAY: Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Jarod Thomas made a school-record 13 saves, including one on an overtime penalty kick, as the Adams State College men’s soccer team tied host Dixie State 1-1 despite being outshot 32-2 through 110 minutes on the road. Junior midfielder Jesse Dunbar scored his first goal in the ninth minute off a Peter Freeman assist. The goal came at the 8:18 mark and was the first-ever lead in the history of the first-year program.

MLS LETS WORLD CUP TAKE CENTER STAGE: Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber announced that the league will not play fixtures during the group phase of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The group phase includes the first 48 games of the 64-game tournament that begins on June 11, 2010, in South Africa. The last MLS game prior to the World Cup will be played June 10, and MLS will not schedule any other fixtures until after the group phase concludes on June 25. MLS also will not schedule games during the semifinals or final.

BURPO TO START VS. SAN JOSE: The Rapids say goalkeeper Preston Burpo is likely to get his second consecutive start this week. Matt Pickens suffered a right knee sprain during a 9-on-9 drill before the Rapids’ 3-2 loss at Toronto practice. He came down on it wrong when he jumped to secure a ball.
