CC mourns death of ‘09 graduate Quon
Colorado College is mourning the Sept. 19 death of Chris Quon, a member of the men’s soccer and men’s lacrosse teams. Quon graduated in May with a degree in economics.
“Chris’s passing has devastated the Colorado College athletics community,” said Horst Richardson, coach of the men’s soccer team. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.”
Quon died suddenly as a result of a heart condition. The Pioneer Press of Glenview, Ill., has more about the new here.
A native of Lake Forest, Ill., Quon burst onto the athletics scene during the 2005 soccer season, when he finished third on the team with five goals and 14 assists. In his first collegiate game, Quon set up the winning goal during a 2-0 victory over the University of La Verne. He later struck for a winner of his own in a 3-0 triumph at Cornell College.
Quon had two goals and two assists before he was injured in the sixth game of the 2006 season, but came back the following year to record a pair of goals, including the winner, in a 3-0 victory over Sewanee.
He completed his soccer career with nine goals, eight assists and 26 points.
“Chris was an inspiration to his teammates through his upbeat nature, outgoing personality and his athletic abilities,” Richardson said.
Quon’s best season in lacrosse occurred as a junior in 2008, when he logged seven goals and nine points. As a senior in 2009, he collected three goals and four assists, scoring the game winner in a 7-4 victory over Kean University.
He finished his lacrosse career with 12 goals and six assists for a total of 18 points.
“The men’s soccer team will dedicate the remainder of the season to his memory,” Richardson said. “We will always have fond memories of Chris.”
MLS VS. NFL: For the first time in its 14-year history, the MLS championship game will be televised on cable, not broadcast television. ESPN will carry MLS Cup on Nov. 22 opposite Sunday Night Football on NBC. Previously MLS championship games were held Sunday afternoons on ABC. Executives from the league and the network decided to move the match to ESPN so that it could start later at its West Coast site, Seattle’s Qwest Field. They believe a later start will enhance the in-stadium atmosphere, which should make it more appealing on television.
SPENNY FINED: The Major League Soccer Disciplinary Committee announced a suspension and fine for Houston Dynamo assistant coach John Spencer. Spencerwas dismissed from Houston’s match vs. Real Salt Lake on Sept. 19. He received an automatic one-game suspension and $500 fine. The committee reviewed the confrontation for which Spencer was dismissed and fined him an additional $1,000 and suspended him one game, bringing the total to $1,500 and two games. Spencer will serve the suspension for Houston’s Oct. 4 match vs. Kansas City and Oct. 18 match vs. the Los Angeles Galaxy.
