Roadrunners stay perfect in RMAC
The Metropolitan State College women’s soccer team scored four second-half goals to cruise to a 5-0 victory over Mesa State on Wednesday on a cold, rainy day at Auraria Field in Denver. The win keeps the Roadrunners perfect in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Metro improved to 4-0 in the RMAC and 7-1 overall; the Mavericks dropped to 5-3 overall, 2-2 in the RMAC.
Becca Mays scored one goal and added a career-high three assists to lead the offense for the 13th-ranked Roadrunners. Madison McQuilliams and Jen Thomas each scored, and the other two goals came on own goals. Ashley Nemmers had a career-high two assists.
Goalkeepers Becca Maloney and Alee Seehausen combined on the shutout. Maloney stopped four shots, and Seehausen made one save, the first of her career.
Metro outshot the Mavericks 21-6, and the game didn’t start well for Mesa.
The Roadrunners jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute, when Kathryn Gosztyla served up a free kick from 40 yards out and Mays headed the ball toward the net. Mesa State goalkeeper Alicia Kahler was unable to control the header and a Maverick defender deflected the loose ball into the net.
McQuilliams converted a chance from the left side in the 62nd minute as Nemmers passed it from the left corner. McQuilliams chipped the goalkeeper from six yards away for the goal.
It was Thomas’ turn less than four minutes later. Mays found Thomas in front of the top of the box, and she took an uncontested shot and buried it off the top of the crossbar.
The Roadrunners added an own goal in the 70th minute as a Mavericks defender deflected a shot by Mays into the net.
Mays got a goal of her own less than a minute later as she finished Gabby Klipp’s cross.
Metro State will travel to Colorado Springs on Friday for a 4:30 p.m. game against Colorado-Colorado Springs.
