Copeland’s goal helps Regis tie Mines
James Copeland scored as the Regis University men’s soccer team tied the 15th-ranked Colorado School of Mines on Friday in Denver.
Regis remained unbeaten in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. The Rangers’ record is 4-2-3 overall, 2-0-3 in conference.
“Whenever you play Mines, it is going to be a tough match, especially when they are ranked in the Top 15,” Regis coach Tony McCall said. ” I just think that our kids know how to believe in themselves and that they can play and can be effective against most teams, even the Top 20 teams.”
Copeland got Regis on the board about five minutes into the match with his first goal of the season. Sophomore Nate Kafer crossed the ball into the middle to freshman Patrick Freeman, who took a shot at the goal. Mines’ freshman goalkeeper, Manville Strand, made the save but could not control the ball. Copeland put the rebound past Strand.
Colorado Mines (7-1-3 overall, 3-1-1 RMAC) tied it up later in the first half. Phil Wilson took a cross from Cale Haas and scored past sophomore goalkeeper Ben Sabados.
Strand stymied the Ranger offense in the second half, earning six saves.
“Our roster is very deep,” McCall said. “Everybody that participated contributed to how we’re playing, and it’s enjoyable to coach them. James Copeland worked extremely hard today, and Donnie Montoya is a senior and one of leaders. He has been extremely effective and positive for the team and is really helping us play our best soccer. He’s a good leader on the field.”
Following a collision with a little less than six minutes remaining in regulation, Sabados was replaced by senior Wally Fink.
Regis outshot Mines 21-20 and was led with six shots by freshman Patrick Bonitatibus and Kafer. Regis also had a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks.
“I just thought that we battled them physically,” McCall said. “I thought that we absorbed a lot of pressure from them. Our success is a result of our strength as a team, and our chemistry is very good right now. Whenever you have talent, good work ethic and good chemistry, I think you’re going to be dangerous.”

Regis 10, Nebraska-Kearney 0: Sophomore Jordan Miller scored three goals and added three assists. Freshmen Marissa Davis and Chelsea Bokan each had two goals, and the Rangers got one each from sophomore Kari Taylor, junior Katie Horn and senior Chelsea Reichard. After tying Nebraska-Kearney 0-0 in Kearney on Sept. 13, the Rangers came out strong and ready to play. “We were 0-0 away, and we had a few injuries that were difficult. We weren’t sharp finishing on the day so the challenge was before us,” Regis coach JB Belzer said. “The kids had been circling this date since we were at Kearney. We performed very well today: clinical finishing, efficient ball movement, mentality to win balls. And that’s exactly what we asked of the players, and they responded.”
Metro State 5, Adams State 0: Becca Mays scored two goals as the nation’s sixth-ranked team allowed just one shot on goal at Auraria Field. UCCS player Gilbert Chavez was with him step-for-step, but Afriyie crossed behind Chavez and launched a sizzling left-footer that went in lower left. “Today we came out and we shut off a couple of times,” UCCS coach Henry Ellis said. “They were able to win a ball, carry it down the field and put it in the back of the net.” The Mountain Lions opened the scoring in the 13th minute.
