Mines players snap up weekly awards
Colorado School of Mines striker Kayla Mitchell was named the RMAC offensive player of the week for games played during the week of Oct. 2. It marks the fifth time in Mitchell’s career and second time this season that she has received this honor.
Mitchell, a senior forward from Ontario, Ore., notched a hat trick in Mines’ 4-0 win over Colorad-Colorado Springs on Friday. Mitchell recorded her third hat trick of the season on Sunday against Adams State and added an assist in route to a 6-0 victory. Both of Mitchell’s goals were game winners. Against Adams State, Mitchell tallied seven points (3 goals, 1 assist) which tied the CSM individual single-game record for points (7) for the second time this season. Mitchell now has six career hat tricks.
This season, Mitchell leads the RMAC in points (36), goals (16) and game-winning goals (8), she ranks second in goals per game (1.23), ranks third in points per game (2.77) and is tied for sixth in assists (4). She has scored a goal in nine of 13 games this season and has multiple goals in four games. In Mitchell’s past five games she has nine goals.
Mitchell had serious competition for the weekly honor: Metropolitan State College senior Becca Mays, who already had been named RMAC offensive player of the week twice this season, registered five goals and an assist in two weekend victories. Two of her goals were game winners.

DEFENSIVE HONOR: Metro State outside back Courtney Ryan was named RMAC defensive player of the week. It was the first time Ryan had received the award. Ryan, a sophomore defender from Chula Vista, Calif., led Metro State to two conference wins last week. She had an assist in a 5-0 win over Adams State on Friday and scored a goal and added another assist in a 5-0 win against Nebraska-Kearney on Sunday. Her strong defensive effort held Adams State to five shot attempts, and she helped the Roadrunners keep UNK without a shot attempt. It was just the third time in Metro State history that it has held an opponent without a shot attempt and the first time since 1998.
MEN’S MONOPOLY FOR MINES: Colorado School of Mines players Cale Haas and Manville Strand grabbed both honors for the men. Haas, a sophomore midfielder from Kingwood, Texas, tallied the assist on CSM’s lone goal in a 1-1 tie against Regis on Friday and notched the game-winner Sunday as Mines defeated Metro State 3-0. Strand, a freshman goalkeeper from Las Vegas, allowed just one goal in 200 minutes in net. This season, Strand has six shutouts, the most in the RMAC. In 1100:43 minutes in goal, Strand has allowed just eight goals. Strand leads the RMAC in save percentage (.862), ranks second in goals against average (0.65) and third in saves (50).
