What are Conor Casey’s detractors saying now?

Since the Confederations Cup, every time Colorado Rapids forward Conor Casey has been in the U.S. men’s national team squad, his critics have been loud and harsh on the Inter-ma-Web.
He scored twice in a 3-2 victory over Honduras on Saturday that clinched the United States’ berth in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. And this wasn’t a gimme. The Nats needed both of his goals.
So what are his detractors saying now? Let’s tune in on Twitter, shall we?
Conor Casey: Built like a cement mixer & as quick. Finds space with his runs, decent first touch, strong in the air & can finish.
congrats to the usmnt. still dont know how connor casey is a professional athelete.
Casey gets start? He netted 2!
Congrats to USMNT for absolutely STICKING IT to Honduras last night. Goals by Casey and Donovan were brilliant!
Casey had quite the match. South Africa 2010 here we come!
forward Conor Casey on getting start @ Honduras “I was a little surprised.” I was shocked. credit 2 Bob Bradley. 2 goals. Gr8 hunch.
Great the USMNT going to South Africa, only wish bob bradley and Conor Casey weren’t. Good enuf to beat Honduras, not 4 rest of world.
Best moments of last ussoccer win in Honduras: Casey’ two goal, Donovan’s free kick, silencing the Honduran noise
Good on Connor Casey in scoring two goals but you can’t tell me that he was a better option at striker than Jozy Altidore
Big US victory. Big attaboy to Conor Casey for proofing all the naysayers wrong! Here we go S Africa
They still call him Goochie…haha! Casey and Landon bossed it
Big upset. Conor Casey scoring two goals in one game for the USMNT. Pack your bags and booster shots for South Africa.
I feel like casey sang ‘put me in coach’ to bob bradley today before the game. I’m glad he did.
got sprayed with champagne cuz conor casey is an animal and the US IS GOING TO THE WORLD CUP
By the way, I apologize for everything I’ve ever said badly about Conor Casey. We owe you one, buddy
Conor Casey has always reminded me of a rugby player, but tonight he was inspiring! Congrats
MOTM: 1. Bootleg Internet stream 2. Casey 3. Mandon Donovan South Africa here we come!
OK, I’ll own up. Conor Casey, it appears I was wrong about you; thanks for that! Well done!

Big time Big Ups to Conor Casey and the #USMNT for qualifying for SA2010
USMNT just battled and battled and found way 2 overcome. How the effin h*ll did Casey
I told my dad that Conor Casey would have to score a couple goals for me to be happy about him starting. Well done, sir, well done.
Conor Casey — man of the match, hands down. Two goals, drew the foul for the winning goal.
Conor Casey (MLS Colorado Rapids) with 2 Goals is my MVP of game vs. Honduras
Conor Casey made a lot of people (including me) eat their “are u kidding me?” words today
Conor Casey looked like Pippo Inzaghi today
Heading for SA2010 thanks to Conor Casey (who’d a thunk it?) and a wonderful PK from Pavon! W00T!!!
have to give credit to bradley tonight. didn’t think casey would work out and he goes out and scores 2 goals.
A fantastic 2nd half performance by the boys in blue. Casey had two incredible goals, topped off by a glorious Donovan free kick
Dear BB, had not been impressed with Casey’s performances before in #USMNT. Sorry I questioned your judgment tonight as he scored 2 goals.
WE’RE GOING TO THE WORLD CUP, CONOR CASEY SCORED, AND LANDON DIDN’T TAKE HIS SHIRT OFF! WHAT A GAME!
Special kudos to Casey and Donovan and Howard
Game Over! On to South Africa for #USMNT thanks to Conor Casey (2 goals + 1 dive / assist)
Well done USMNT! Got to say, kudos to Bradley for playing Casey. Turned out to be a stroke of genius.
Conor Casey (2g), Landon Donovan (1g, driving force), Oguchi Onyewu and Tim Howard your heroes. And all credit to Bob Bradley.
Congrats to @ussoccer on qualifying for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa! Great game from Conor Casey.
See you in South Africa! US 3-2 over Honduras. The Casey start paid off huge and a big goal from Lando.
great win on the road – conor casey – new star????
My Man of the Match: CONOR CASEY! Wow, what a bold, bold move by Bradley to start him and he was crucial in the 2nd half.
Conor Casey just booked his ticket, along with the USMNT, to the 2010 World Cup! next up, MLS MVP/Gold Boot!
Who saw Conor Casey coming as MOTM? He only scores in MLS on PKs
Giving a standing ovation to Conor Casey as he went off! He deserved it tonight!
Let’s give the bald-headed monster a standing O! Conor Casey 2 goals tonite.
Gooooooal! I officially apologize to Conor Casey. I was sooooo wrong!
Ok, I take it all back…thank you Conor Casey! As always, happy to be wrong!
So, not everybody is sold, but there are a whole lot of soldiers in Sam’s Army who are eating some crow for their Sunday brunch because of our “bald-headed monster.” And another result of this one performance by Casey might be that he does better in the Major League Soccer MVP balloting. One of the lesser-informed writers above mentioned that Casey scores only on PKs. Of course that’s fallout from three of the past four Rapids matches, where Casey has scored from the penalty spot to forge ties for the boys in burgundy and blue. Saturday’s U.S. game will give him nothing but more credibility with MLS fans and with followers of the national team.

I’ve been one of those detractors and i’m still not sold. Eddie Johnson’s scored goals in qualifiers too. I give him all the credit in the world for his huge game … but one game doesn’t change my opinion of him. his place in SA isn’t close to being assured, which is ironic since he helped punch the ticket! I wanna see more of the same. Couldn’t Jozy have scored both of those goals?
It’s about the match-up. A big body like Casey works well against a team like Honduras. Probably would be more challenging against a team like Germany or Netherlands, where it seems like they’re all that big and even faster.
For those that do not know or have forgotten, Conor Casey played in the German Bundesliga from 2000 through 2006. Having grown up in Germany watching soccer, I can tell you that he would not have lasted longer than a few months (kind of like Landon Donovan ) had he not displayed natural talent and skill. He may not look like the fastest player on the field, but watch him on a regular basis like I do and you will notice that like any smart athlete, he paces himself and uses his speed when he actually has or is about to get the ball. All players have good and bad days (look at Cristiano Ronaldo in the Champions League final against Barcelona). I for one am completely convinced that Conor Casey is a world class soccer player.
good lord Genene, if you’re gonna try so hard to establish your soccer credentials, don’t go and muck it all up with such a nonsense statement as ‘I for one am completely convinced that Conor Casey is a world class soccer player.’ Just saying ‘Nevermind, I have no clue’ would have been much quicker.
He’s an above-averager MLS forward … not an elite one. And that makes somebody world class. I guess the bar is set pretty low for world class status nowadays.
Where are Conor Casey’s supporters now? He was back to his old self last night — bad touches, ineffective play and a habit to disappear from the game. Off to MLS with ye!
Here’s where Casey’s supporters are!
Mike,
I didn’t muck anything up and based on your comments I think we both know who has no clue. I know talent when I see it. I have been watching european soccer for 25 years. Just because he doesn’t meet your standards doesn’t mean he is an avarage player.
Genene, just because he meets your standards doesn’t mean he is a world-class player. I know talent when I see it too. Don’t act like you’re the only one who knows things.
