Freshman Kettmann leads Regis past Mines in crucial RMAC match
The Regis University women’s soccer team, seeded two spots behind the Colorado School of Mines in the Central Region rankings, used a goal by freshman Erin Kettmann to knock off the Orediggers 1-0 on Wednesday in Golden.
Regis, ranked fifth in the region, improved to 10-2-2 overall and 7-1-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference with its fifth win in as many matches. Regis’ streak of wins began on Sept. 27 with a 2-1 defeat of Adams State in Alamosa; since then, Regis has scored 20 goals.
And the Rangers’ victory sets up a big game at 1 p.m. Friday against conference leader Metropolitan State College at Auraria Field in downtown Denver. Metro is ranked first in the Central Region.
Mines, ranked third, slipped to 13-3 overall and 9-3 RMAC play.
In the first half, Regis took seven shots, one of which would end up being the winning goal. At the 19:37 mark, Kettmann shot from the right side of the box past Mines goalkeeper Briana Schulze and inside the far post. It was Kettmann’s third goal of the season.
The Orediggers had two scoring chances on corner kicks at the end of the match. However, Megan Woodworth’s shot was blocked, and Aubrey Bagley’s was saved.
Regis took five shots in the second half, for a total of 12. Mines had nine shots in the match. Each team put four shots on frame.
The Orediggers will meet Nebraska-Kearney at 1 p.m. Friday at the Colorado School of Mines Soccer Stadium.
