Fort Lewis takes 49 shots in 11-0 victory
Euan Purcell’s treble and Byron Cephers’ brace led the Fort Lewis College men’s soccer team as it recorded an 11-0 victory against Colorado Christian University on Sunday in Lakewood.
Fort Lewis, ranked No. 6 in the nation, recorded 49 shots in the victory to improve to 13-1 overall, 10-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Colorado Christian (1-9-1, 0-9-0) took six shots.
Purcell and Cephers accounted for five goals, but that was less than half of the Skyhawks’ output. Fort Lewis’ other goal scorers were Jamie Cunningham, Joe Barnd, Abdel Becerra, Jeff Jennings, David Barden and Thomas Hoang.
The Fort Lewis women also had a field day in the shooting department. …
WOMEN
Fort Lewis 4, Nebraska-Kearney 0: Michelle Felten scored twice and Kortney Hull and Ashley Kniffen added goals for the Skyhawks at home. Fort Lewis outshot UNK 40-1. FLC improved to 14-2-1 overall and 10-2-1 in RMAC play as Kearney dropped to 1-14-1, 0-11-1.
Arkansas-Little Rock 3, Denver 1: In Little Rock, DU freshman Kaitlin Bast scored her ninth goal of the season, but the Pioneers fell to 10-5-1 overall and 5-2-0 in the Sun Belt Conference. Christina Veasley tallied all three Trojans goals as Little Rock climbed to 6-9-1, 3-4-1 in the SBC.
Regis 3, UCCS 1: The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs’ three-game winning streak ended in Denver. UCCS goalkeeper Kayla Millar’s streak of three consecutive shutouts also came to an end as Regis got goals from Marissa Davis, Kari Davis and Jordan Miller. Julia Saenz scored for the Mountain Lions, who dropped to 6-6, 5-6 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Nicole Eddings got the win in goal for Regis (11-3-2, 8-2-2 RMAC), making two saves while playing the second half in relief of starter Rosie Campbell, who made one save. The two teams will meet again Wednesday in Colorado Springs to make up a match originally scheduled for Oct. 11.
Colorado College 4, Marshall 0: CC wasted no time getting its point across. The Tigers needed less than six minutes to seize an early lead, then unleashed a balanced attack in Conference USA women’s soccer action at Stewart Field in Colorado Springs. CC, now 10-5-1 overall and assured of its 31st winning season in 35 years of varsity competition, remains in a second-place tie with UTEP and the University of Memphis in the league standings. All three teams are 6-2 in conference. Senior defender Lauren Talbot struck for Sunday’s winning goal at the 5:46 mark, completing a double header of Beth Wright’s first of six corner kicks in the contest. Senior midfielder Ericka Baer, who also would score at 33:10 to make it 2-0, headed Wright’s serve to Talbot, who notched her second tally of the season to give the Tigers all the cushion they would need. Senior forward Sarah Wolff came off the bench and upped the count to 3-0 five minutes after Baer’s goal, and senior midfielder Kelly LaVoie completed the rout with her fifth of the season early in the second half.
Metro State 1, New Mexico Highlands 0: The No. 6 Roadrunners escaped Las Vegas, N.M., with a victory as Madison McQuilliams scored on a penalty kick in the 48th minute. The Roadrunners did not allow a shot for the second time this season and fourth time in school history, outshooting Highlands 15-0.
Adams State 0, Colorado Christian 0: The Grizzlies and Cougars left much unsettled in the RMAC tournament chase. Adams State improved to 6-10-1 overall and to 4-8-1 in RMAC play, good for 13 points with three matches remaining. The Cougars are 7-6-3 overall and 4-6-2 in conference play, good for 14 points. They have four matches remaining on the 2009 slate and trail Mesa State and UC-Colorado Springs, both of whom lost in other RMAC matches on Sunday, by just one point in the RMAC standings. Grizzlies sophomore goalkeeper Kirsten Dorsey recorded her second shutout of the week and the third of her season. Cougars goalkeeper Liana Signorile made five saves and picked up her seventh shutout of the year. Dorsey made six for the Grizzlies.
CSU-Pueblo 1, Mesa State 0: Candice Duffy scored in the 30th minute on an assist from Leanne Carberry. Duffy’s goal was her third of the season for Pueblo, 8-8-0 overall, 5-7-0 in RMAC play. CSU-Pueblo fell to 4-10-2, 3-8-1 RMAC. Pueblo’s Randi Walters recorded 10 saves.
MEN
Colorado School of Mines 3, Mesa State College 0: Just as goalkeeper Manville Strand predicted after losing to Fort Lewis on Friday, the Orediggers would take their frustrations out on their next opponent. Mines recorded its ninth shutout of the season, the seventh for Strand, who made three saves. In the 44th minute, Chike Sullivan eluded multiple Mesa State defenders and hit a shot from 20 yards out for the goal, his fifth. Cale Haas scored in the 47th minute, and Mines got an own-goal in the 82nd.
Regis 3, CSU-Pueblo 0: James Copeland got his sixth goal of the season, and the Rangers also got goals from Jordan Brandel and Ben Buhler. Senior Wally Fink posted his third shutout of the season and his second in a row, saving four shots and facing 13. With the shutout, Fink now moves into a tie for fourth place on the all-time Regis career shutout list, with six. Regis improved to 7-3-4 overall and , 5-1-4 in RMAC play; Pueblo slipped to 6-9, 2-8. Regis currently sits in fourth place in the RMAC, which takes the top four teams to the postseason tournament.
Metro State 4, UCCS 1: Steven Emory recorded his first career hat trick, and Ri Armstrong added the fourth goal for the Roadrunners, who outshot UCCS 30-9. The Mountain Lions scored first but couldn’t hold the lead. Matt Friesen converted Eric Goldberg’s pass off a free kick in the 31st minute to give UCCS (6-8-1, 3-6-1 RMAC) the lead. It was Friesen’s sixth goal of the season and Goldberg’s fourth assist. Prior to Sunday, the Mountain Lions were 9-1-1 when scoring first since Henry Ellis became the team’s coach prior to the 2008 season. Adam Liszewski had nine saves in the losing effort for the Mountain Lions. Dominique Griffith made three saves for Metro State.
Sacramento State 2, Denver 1: The Pioneers (3-7-2 overall and 0-2-0 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) took an early lead when Sacramento State (6-5-1, 2-0-0 MPSF) failed to clear a Denver cross and scored an own goal in the 19th minute. The Hornets tied the game in the 31st minute, when David von Stockhausen scored on a diving header off a free kick. Sacramento State’s Ernesto Carranza knocked in the winner in the 67th minute. The Pioneers return home next weekend for games against UNLV on Friday and New Mexico on Sunday.
SATURDAY
Idaho State 2, Northern Colorado 0: UNC was not able to overcome a two-goal deficit in Pocatello. The Bears fell to 4-9-1 on the season and 0-4-0 in Big Sky play. The Bengals got on the board first only seven minutes into the match with Megan Stainbrook’s unassisted goal. Stainbrook collected a rebound off of a defender to make the shot from the far right side. In the 16th minute of the game the Bears put pressure on the Bengals goal with sophomore Kimmie Feidler hitting the post and the crossbar and senior Sydney VanderVelde making a shot that went just wide all in 20 seconds. Idaho State sealed the win with a goal in the 40th minute off of a breakaway shot from Laura Perez. Northern Colorado will host Eastern Washington at 7 p.m. Friday at Jackson Stadium.
