Rapids eliminated from playoffs

Jeff Larentowicz scored his first goal of 2009 in the last game of the regular season as the New England Revolution beat the team with the most points in the league, Columbus, on Sunday, eliminating the Colorado Rapids from Major League Soccer’s playoffs.
The Rapids lost 3-0 on Saturday at Real Salt Lake. Colorado could’ve clinched its place in the playoffs with a victory; RSL needed to win by two goals and have a few other dominoes fall into place to advance. They won by three, and the dominoes fell nicely.
That left the Rapids hoping Columbus would beat the Revs on Sunday, allowing Colorado to back in as the No. 8 seed. But Larentowicz saw to it that it would not happen.

It took 48 hours before I could comment, but …
There’s no excuse for this collapse. A team goes 0-3-4 to finish a season when it runs out of steam. There’s no reason for a team not playing in CONCACAF, the US Open Cup, SuperLiga or any other competition to so completely fall apart.
Yes, bypassing the midfield to start every attack is a limited option, but that doesn’t forgive this meltdown. I’m thoroughly disappointed.
