Fort Lewis sweeps RMAC tourney titles
Defender Fabian Kling scored the winning goal in the 40th minute as the Fort Lewis College men’s soccer team won the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournament 3-1 against Metropolitan State College on Sunday in Durango.
Kling booted home a corner kick by Tom Settle as the Skyhawks took a 2-1 lead just before halftime.
Euan Purcell added an insurance goal in the 66th minute as Fort Lewis, ranked No. 2 in the nation, improved to 19-1 overall. Metro, ranked 21st in Division II, slipped to 12-7-2. Purcell headed in a centering pass by Jeff Jennings.
Fort Lewis’ other center back, Jamie Cunningham, opened the scoring in the sixth minute, heading in another corner kick from Settle.
Metro State got its goal in the 35th minute from RMAC player of the year Steven Emory. Jack Belanger took a free kick, and Emory headed it past FLC goalkeeper Zane Wells.
Wells finished the game with two saves; Metro State’s Dominique Griffith had seven saves.
The official attendance was 967.
