FLC blanks Mines, faces West Texas A&M on Sunday in Durango
On a cold wet day, the Fort Lewis College men’s soccer team defeated the Colorado School of Mines 3-0 on Friday in the first round of the NCAA tournament in Durango. The game resembled a Slip ‘n Slide because of pouring rain and freezing wind.
Fort Lewis advances to the second round and will face West Texas A&M at 1 p.m. Sunday in Durango. West Texas A&M defeated Midwestern State 3-0 on Friday.
The field conditions leveled the playing field for Mines and Fort Lewis, although the Skyhawks were able to put up 10 shots to Mines’ one. After a few balls skipped across the watery surface and gave each a team some problems, FLC struck in the 43rd minute. Tom Settle fired a free kick just outside the penatly area, and the ball deflected off a Mines player. Mines goalkeeper Manville Strand dived one way to make the save, but the ball went the opposition direction after the deflection.
Strand left the match with a leg injury, and the Skyhawks attacked with gusto in the second half. Fort Lewis maintained possession of the ball the majority of the second half. Fort Lewis was able to put up two more goals within two minutes of each other. In the 83rd minute, Settle centered a ball into the box, where Joe Barnd was able to get his head on the ball for a 2-0 lead. In the 85th minute, Settle received another assist after switching the ball to the left side of the field, where Dimo Krymanidis controlled the ball then ripped a shot with his left foot from 30 yards out.
And although the Orediggers’ Jacob Juett and Drew Werth had two shots come extremely close to goals, goalkeeper Zane Wells made two great saves to earn a shutout.
Fort Lewis finished the game with 21 shots, and Mines had five shots. Strand finished with one save, and backup keeper Adam Midgley recorded three.
Colorado Mines finishes its season with an overall record of 15-3-4.
