The University of Denver men’s soccer team (5-10-4) was unable to rebound from an early first-half goal by New Mexico’s Justin Davis, falling 1-0 in the semifinals of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation’s men’s soccer tournament on Friday evening at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium. The win advances the Lobos (12-6-0) to the MPSF championship game at 1 p.m. Sunday against top-seeded Sacramento State

“It’s a tough way to end the season,” head coach Bobby Muuss said. “We gave up a tough goal in the early minutes of the game and were unable to bounce back from it. I’m proud of the way our guys fought the rest of the way, and it’s unfortunate that our season has to come to an end this way.”

A little more than 11 minutes into the match, Davis slipped a Stephen Brown pass into the bottom right corner of the net under a diving Joe Willis from the top of the box to give the Lobos the advantage.

Willis finished the night with six saves, while the Pioneers’ offense of Alex DeCosta, Alex Tarnoczi and Matt Kirby finished with multiple shots on goal.

Earlier in the day, Sacramento State (11-5-2) defeated UNLV (8-7-4) 1-0 in double overtime.

After 101 minutes of action during heavy snowfall, the Hornets’ Matt Linenberger received a pass from Fernando Cabadas and dribbled it into the box, slipping a shot past a diving Rebels’ goalie. The goal ended the game and gave the Hornets their 11th win of the season.
