The University of Denver women’s soccer team ended its season with a 4-0 loss to No. 2 Portland in the opening round of the NCAA tournament Friday night at Merlo Field in Portland, Oregon.

Portland (19-1-0) tallied its first goal off a corner kick in the 25th minute as Danielle Foxhoven’s kick landed at the foot of Sophie Schmidt. Schmidt took a one-timer that found the back of the net.

The Pilots’ second goal came at 32:32. Taylor Brooke dribbled around the DU defenders and passed to a wide-open Foxhoven. She made the shot eight yards out over freshman goalkeeper Lara Campbell.

Denver (17-6-1) had a strong scoring chance in the first half as freshman forward Kaitlin Bast dribbled around two Pilot defenders and took a hard shot to the right side of the box. Portland goalkeeper Kelsey Davis made the diving save.

Campbell and Davis ended the first half with one save; Portland held Denver at a 7-2 advantage on corner kicks.

Three minutes into the second half, DU had its second solid scoring opportunity as Bast outran a Pilot defender and passed to senior midfielder Kelli Breidenbach, whose shot was stopped by Davis.

In the 60th minute, Schmidt passed to Kendall Johnson, who saw Campbell was up front in the goal and took a shot that made its way to the back of the net.

Brooke scored a goal of her own in the 70th minute off a pass from Jessica Tsao.

Portland will take on Washington on Sunday.
