FLC men roll past West Texas A&M
The Fort Lewis College men’s soccer team defeated West Texas A&M 3-1 in front of a loud and lively crowd Sunday in the second round of the Divison II playoffs.
Fort Lewis advances with a 21-1-0 record; the Skyhawks find out the location and opponent of their next match today (Monday).
FLC opened the scoring the 24th minute, when the Buffs attempted to clear the ball but it bounced to the top of the box. Senior captain Jeff Jennings fired in a hard, low shot past Buffs goalkeeper Sebastian Furness for a 1-0 lead.
The Skyhawks scored two more goals early in the second half. In the 56th minute, Jennings centered the ball from the right side of the field. The ball sailed over everyone and found the head of Thomas Hoang at the far post for a goal on an easy header.
Less than a minute later, Hoang passed the ball into the box past a few defenders, and Joe Barnd made a run on the ball. Barnd punched the ball into the top of the net for a 3-0 lead.
In the 81st minute, Ben Everson was able to control a ball inside the box and lay a shot past FLC goalkeeper Zane Wells into the upper right for the Buffs’ lone goal.
West Texas A&M finished the game with eight shots. Furness recorded two saves in the loss. The Buffs end their season with an overall record of 15-2-2.
Fort Lewis tallied 17 shots. Barnd and Euan Purcell each had four shots. Wells earned the win with three saves.
