Kayla Mitchell And Allison Heeg scored as the Colorado School of Mines women’s soccer team defeated Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournament champion Fort Lewis 2-1 on Sunday at Dirks Field in Durango.

Mines (19-4-0) will face Metropolitan State College at noon Friday at Auraria Field in downtown Denver.

Mitchell, who finished the match with eight shots, scored the winning goal in the 40th minute, capitalizing on some miscommunication in the Fort Lewis defense.

The Skyhawks (18-3-3) tied the match on a Hayley Hollenga goal off an assist from Elena Benavides.

Mitchell assisted on the match’s first goal in the eighth minute. She drove a corner kick toward the near post toward Allison Heeg, who volleyed the ball past Fort Lewis goalkeeper Christine Schmelzle for her second goal of the season. The assist was Mitchell’s ninth of the year.

Fort Lewis had 13 corner kicks to Mines’ three, and the Skyhawks outshot the Orediggers 18-13. Hollenga and Sam Smith led the Skyhawks with four shots apiece. Schmelzle made one save, and Mines’ Briana Schulze was forced to make nine.
