Mitchell named first-team All-American
Colorado School of Mines striker Kayla Mitchell has been named a Daktronics first-team All-American. She is the first women’s soccer player to earn All-America honors at Mines.
Mitchell, a senior from Ontario, Ore., was selected as the 2009 Daktronics Central Region player of the year and the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference player of the Year. A unanimous first-team All-RMAC
pick, Mitchell led the conference in goals (30), points (69) and winning goals (14). She ranked fourth in assists (9). Mitchell is seventh in Division II in goals per game (1.2) and points per game (2.76).
During the conference season, Mitchell was named RMAC offensive player of the week four times and was selected as the RMAC women’s athlete for the month of October.
Mitchell had five hat tricks, including a four-goal performance against Colorado State University-Pueblo in which she established single-game Mines records for points and goals. For her efforts in the classroom, she earned CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine second-team Academic All-America honors and was selected as the 2009 RMAC women’s soccer academic player of the year. Mitchell also earned CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine first-team academic all-district and first-team academic All-RMAC honors. The 21st-ranked Orediggers (19-5-1) advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II tournament.
