USL adds Rocky Mountain Division
United Soccer Leagues announced the addition Thursday of the Super-20 League women’s Rocky Mountain Division for the 2010 season.
The division will start play next month and feature Colorado clubs – Boulder County Force, Colorado Force, Colorado Rush, Pride Soccer Club and Real Colorado.
“The creation of the Rocky Mountain Division is a natural step for the Super-20 League as we create a bridge between our Pacific Southern California and Midwest Divisions,” said Erin McGauley, USL’s Director of Super Y-League and Super-20 League Operations. “The rich history within Colorado soccer of the clubs involved in the formation of the Rocky Mountain Division has made for a smooth process, and we’re excited they will be able to begin play immediately in what will surely be one of our most competitive divisions.”
The Tampa, Fla.-based USL characterized the addition of the division as meeting part of its expansion goals for the game. The division adds to the continuing growth of the USL Super-20 League following last week’s announcement of impending expansion into the Northwest (Washington, Oregon, Idaho, British Columbia) for men’s and women’s teams. USL announced that it is also exploring additional men’s and women’s Super-20 League expansion into the Great Lakes, Midwest and Southeast regions.
No strangers to USL, the Colorado Force are one of the longest standing members of the USL W-League, having joined in 1997. Colorado Rush also features a USL W-League team, while Real Colorado has a men’s team competing in the USL Premier Development League.
As the only U-20 men’s and women’s North American amateur league, the USL Super-20 League provides the platform for top 17- to 20-year-olds in the United States and Canada to compete at the elite level. While serving as a reserve team system for many W-League and Premier Development League teams, the USL Super-20 League features teams competing in regional divisions, consisting of 8-10 regular season matches throughout the summer months.
