The Red Devils are coming! (sort of…)
Major League Soccer announced today that Manchester United will be coming to take on the MLS all-stars, July 28, in Toronto.
In addition, the club will play games in Philadelphia and Kansas City. The games will be preseason training for the perennial EPL power and the first time MLS teams will get a shot at ManU.
“It’s great to be going back to North America,” Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson said. “I enjoyed the last two tours there in 2003 and 2004 immensely. The quality of the facilities is outstanding and there is real enthusiasm in the crowds. It’s especially pleasing to be going in a World Cup year, when interest in football will be at its height.”
The 2010 AT&T MLS All-Star Game will mark the seventh time the best of MLS have faced international opposition. Most of these games have come against English Premier League opposition, including Chelsea, Everton, Fulham and West Ham. The league side has fared very well over the years, with the only loss coming last year on penalty kicks against Everton.
Given the crowds expected for the matches, the Union will host Manchester United at Lincoln Financial Field on July 21 while the Kansas City Wizards will make a return to Arrowhead Stadium on July 25. ManU hasplayed twice before at the Linc, drawing 68,396 in 2003 against Barcelona and dropping a result to Celtic in front of 55,421 fans in July 2004, during the team’s most recent U.S. tour.
All of this begs the question of whether to fly or make the grueling drive across Kansas to catch the ManU visit. One of the things I always hated about going to a Wizards was the emptiness of Arrowhead Stadium. I wonder what it would look like filled to capacity. Hmmmmm.
