League adds to fines coffer
It’s only Thursday, and it has already been a busy week for Major League Soccer’s disciplinary committee.
The committee fined FC Dallas midfielder Bruno Guarda $750 Thursday for kicking a ball into the crowd and making an offensive gesture toward fans during halftime of the FC Dallas versus Philadelphia Union game on Saturday at Lincoln Financial Field.
In addition, FC Dallas issued Guarda a one-game suspension, which will be served during their next game, a match against the LA Galaxy on Thursday night.
While Guarda did not appear in the game, he was a member of the 18-man roster for the Dallas match against Philadelphia. At halftime, Guarda kicked a ball into the stands and made an offensive gesture toward the crowd. The action was not seen by the officiating crew and Guarda did not receive any discipline at the match. After reviewing the incident, the MLS Disciplinary Committee issued a $750 fine for the offense.
On Tuesday, MLS suspended Columbus Crew forward Guillermo Barros Schelotto for one game and fined him $250 for his off the ball actions against Chivas USA defender Michael Umaña on Saturday.
The incident, which occurred in the 79th minute of the game, was not seen by the officiating crew and Schelotto was not called for a foul. After reviewing the play, the MLS Disciplinary Committee decided that the action constituted a red card offense.
As a result, Schelotto will miss the Crew’s next league match, against the New York Red Bulls on Thursday, May 20.
