Slumping and stumbling meet in Seattle
The Colorado Rapids get a chance to right the ship and make a summer time move when the team faces the Seattle Sounders on Sunday.
The Rapids (6-4-5, 23 points) could move into a tie with FC Dallas for third place in the Western Conference with a win. A loss and the squad risks dropping to fifth behind the San Jose Earthquakes.
Seattle, which has made it to the semifinals in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, is 5-8-4 (19 points) and suffering a sophomore slump. The team, which debuted an electric yellow third jersey in an exhibition loss to Glasgow Celtic last week, is mired in seventh in the West.
A win for Colorado would not only pull the team into third, but FC Dallas comes to Dick’s Sporting Goods Park on July 31. Two wins would help salvage a month that has seen the Rapids pick up two points in three games and sink on an 0-1-4 streak.
Travelers: The Rapids are 3-3-2 in MLS play on the road this season.
Homers: Seattle is 3-4-2 at home in league play this season.
Thrice: The Rapids and Seattle have only met three times since the Sounders joined MLS in 2009. Last year, the Rapids tied Seattle 2-2 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park before losing 3-0 at Qwest Field on June 29.
This season, the Rapids won 1-0 at home on a Conor Casey strike.
Dry Spell: Colorado’s last MLS win came on June 5, a 1-0 home victory over the Columbus Crew. That was the same day that Seattle last won at home in MLS competition, a 3-0 win over New England.
Broadcast: The 8:30 p.m. game on Sunday will be available nationally on Fox Soccer Channel.
