Freshman forward Kristen Hamilton and sophomore Kalie Vaughn each had a goal and assist, as the University of Denver women’s soccer team rolled to a 5-1 victory over Nebraska in an exhibition game at CIBER Field on Sunday afternoon.

Denver opened the scoring less than four minutes into the game, when Vaughn dribbled toward the top of the box and dropped a pass back to senior midfielder Kelsey Quinn, who buried a shot.

The Pioneers extended the lead in the 22nd minute. Hamilton dribbled the ball up the right side of the field before veering toward the middle and passing to a wide open senior forward Lauren Cavarra, who directed the ball just inside the right post.

Nebraska cut the deficit with just 32 seconds remaining in the first period, when Blair Slapper sent a corner to Colleen Goetzmann, who headed it into the right side of the goal.

Hamilton added a goal in the 49th minute, dribbling in and firing it past the goalkeeper after a long pass from freshman midfielder Nicholette DiGiacomo.

Denver’s freshmen class stepped up again when midfielder Stephanie Woo scored off a feed from defender Sara Riazi in the 63rd minute.

With just over 11 minutes remaining in the game, junior forward Taylor Bailey beat the goalkeeper, who was playing high on the right side, and placed a pass into the open field, where Vaughn found the open net.
Because the game was an exhibition contest, the coaches decided to play three 30-minute periods instead of two 45-minute halves.

The Pioneers will open the regular season at Loyola Marymount on August 27.
