Rapids record when scoring once key
After 19 games, the Colorado Rapids have scored 21 goals. Not an offensive juggernaut by any standard. However, the team remains in playoff contention as the season enters its final third.
As the Rapids ready for the weekend match at Columbus, we take a quick look at the team’s lack of offense. For this study, we’re starting with how a squad that has scored so few goals remains in contention.
Totality: First, here’s Colorado’s record by goals scored by both teams in a game.
In one goal games: 6-4-0
In two goal games: 0-0-4
In three goal games: 0-1-0
In four goal games: 1-0-3
In 14 of the team’s 19 games this season, the Rapids have managed to score one or fewer goals. In those 14 games, the team has six wins, four losses and four draws. Those games account for 22 of the team’s 28 points.
In games where at least three goals are scored, the Rapids are in trouble. The team is only 1-1-3 in those five games. It’s probably fortunate that a team having so much trouble finding the back of the net has only lost one game where more than two goals were scored.
Surrender: Next, here’s the team’s record based on goals surrendered.
Shutout opponents: 6-0-0
Allowed one goal: 1-4-4
Allowed two goals: 0-1-3
As long as the Rapids aren’t giving up a goal, the team is getting just enough to win. Giving up one goal, however, has resulted in only one win in nine games. Giving up more than one goal has led to no wins, but only one loss in four such games.
Scoring: Finally, here’s the team’s record based on goals scored.
Shutout: 0-4-0
Scored one goal: 6-1-4
Scored two goals: 0-0-3
Scored three goals: 1-0-0
Beyond the obvious need to score to avoid losing, the Rapids have a peculiar habit. If they can get just one goal, they are going to net at least one point and stand better than a 50 percent chance of winning. Scoring a second goal, however, does not mean a win. In those four games, the only win came when the Rapids netted a third goal, which happened April 18 in the 3-1 home win over Toronto FC.
So What?: What this all means is that Rapids fans can continue to expect to add gray hairs as the team grinds to another nailbiting finish. Aaaaaaaaugh!
