Roadrunners get final say
In a game where each team dominated for periods, but neither team was dominating, the Metro State women emerged with a 3-2 victory over the University of the Incarnate Word in the season opener Friday afternoon at Auraria Field.
The season was barely six minutes old when Roadrunner midfielder Madison McQuillams found forward Aleah DeGeneres with room in front of the UIW goal. DeGeneres delivered a shot past ‘keeper Toni Puentes to open scoring on the day and the season.
Metro State’s goal was the highlight of the first 15 minutes, which the Roadrunners largely controlled. As the half went on, the Cardinals from San Antonio, Texas, started winning the battle in midfield. Their attacks ultimately resulted in a cracking tying goal with 17 minutes remaining in the half.
Again, the Roadrunners started to dominate play, stringing together passes and putting shots on goal. Senior Ashley Munchiando latched onto a ball in a scramble in front of the Incarnate World goal and buried it past Puentes in the 42nd minute.
Metro State looked to take command at the start of the second half. Senior Ashley Nemmers took a pass from defender Jakkie Greer and then speed past two defenders, got the angle on a third and fired from the left side into the far corner in the 54th minute.
The Roadrunners appeared to get too comfortable too quickly, and paid for it two minutes later. Midfielder Jordyn Garcia found an open Sarah Hernandez onside and streaking for the goal. Hernandez slipped the ball into the net past ‘keeper Alee Seehausen.
Inexorably, the altitude and heat started to take over the game. By the final minutes, the Roadrunners were content to take the ball to the corner and play out the clock. The tactic led to the final margin of 3-2 and a 1-0-0 start to the season.
The Roadrunners return to action at home against Southwest Baptist (Missouri) at noon on Monday.
