Pioneers falter against Penn State
The University of Denver men’s soccer team dropped a 4-0 decision to No. 23 Penn State on Sunday afternoon at CIBER field.
“Obviously we’re disappointed with the result today,” head coach Bobby Muuss said. “However, I don’t think the score reflected the actual match. Penn State did a great job finishing their chances, but we had some good looks that we weren’t able to put in. I still think this team has a special run in them and that we can be a very good team in the future.”
Penn State (4-1-1) opened the scoring in the 21st minute when forward Corey Hertzog placed a shot across the goal to the right corner to take a 1-0 lead over Denver (4-2-0).
Senior Matheus Braga doubled the Nittany Lion lead just three minutes into the second half when he headed a corner kick into the right side of the goal to make it 2-0.
The Pioneer offense threatened in the second half, creating chances in front of the goal, but Penn State goalkeeper Warren Gross made five saves and the Nittany Lions put the game away for good with two quick strikes in the 80th and 82nd minutes, securing the 4-0 victory.
Senior Teale Stone made six saves in goal on the day while allowing four shots to reach the nylon. Denver was outshot by the Nittany Lions 19-11.
The loss ended the Pioneers’ unbeaten streak at four games, which included a win over No. 20 Georgetown and a tie with No. 16 Portland.
Next up, the Pioneers begin a five-game road stretch when they take on No. 25 California on Friday, Sept. 24 at 5 p.m. MT.
