Buffs honored after win
An upset victory over the weekend was only the start for the CU Buffs.
Freshman Lizzy Herzl was named Big 12 Conference Co-Newcomer of the Week and freshman Alex Dohm was named to the CollegeSoccer360.com Primetime Performer of the Week team following their efforts in the 1-0 double-overtime win over No. 10 UCLA in the Omni Hotels Colorado Soccer Classic Sunday.
Dohm tends to play at the forward position and Herzl is usually seen on the defensive end of the field, but head coach Bill Hempen decided to change their roles on Sunday, and it paid off.
Herzl entered the game for the first time at the start of the first overtime period and at forward, a position she had never played while at CU. Her role was to add some fresh speed to the offense, but she went above and beyond as she surprised everyone and scored the game-winner on the first shot she’s attempted this season to clinch the win over the Bruins.
Dohm’s role during the game against UCLA was to defend the Bruins’ leading scorer Sydney Leroux. The pressure she put on Leroux limited the All-America standout to only two shots on goal in 108 minutes.
Dohm’s contribution cannot be ignored. Leroux has been a terror at forward for the U.S. U-20 National Team, and she was a finalist for the 2009 MAC Hermann Trophy. National Team coach Pia Sundhage called her in on the initial 30-player roster for the senior national team that will face China twice next month.
